Other inexpensive valve options include early (1965 and older) Ford 289 valves at 1.78" intake and 1.45" exhaust. They are about .045" longer than the 1.78" Ford 240 I6 intake valve. The Ford 240 exhaust valve is 1.56" which requires cutting down to fit, but the 289 valve does not. You want the early 289 valve as the later ones have a longer tip and will reduce the valve spring installed height.

Many folks use the 1.72" Chevy small block intake valve. MELLING V0399 is $2.05 on RockAuto, but it uses 2-groove locks. The matching exhaust valve is MELLING V1192 at 1.50" for $4.20.

I put Manley Severe Duty 1.72/1.50" valves in the Bonneville engine. Sold in set of 8 those intake valves are $240 and the exhaust are $268 from Summit.
I think that Dad truck used the 289 valves in his build. Would that mean different springs retainers and locks would also be needed?

Nother question, the machine shop called and said that they only went 20-over, I have heard others say that to go with oversized valves that the engine would have to go 60 over. Will oversized valves hit the sides of the bores if bored less than 60?

With the 289 valves being longer will that mess with having to get different length pushrods? I do plan on a head shave, and possibly a slight deck shave.

I did see a place that had a set of engine buildr valves for this engine online the other nite, I think they had the exhausts, I went thru their listings looking for the intakes in their listings but then couldn't find the exhausts when I went back to where I had been earlier.

I fit 1.78" intake valves in 3.430" cylinders. The valve locks need to change because of the stem diameter and lock groove change, but the retainers can stay the same. You'll want to check pushrod length.

Don, I think you can run bigger valves on a smaller bore - You might have to grind on the block at the top of the cylinder to make it all work.

I am pretty sure others have done this, but I have not.

Ok I found the place online with the engine buildr exhaust valves and have sent an email to see if they have the intakes. Well see what happens there. If that fails I still have the set of OEM Mopar NOS stock sized valves here. Well have to see.

I just remembered! I put a head with 1.78" intake valves on a stock bore engine. That was my '67 Valiant with the original short block including the camshaft. Ran 17-flat at Woodburn with the column shifted 3-speed.

Aren't those 1.78, stock 318 size?
Can stems be cut off and new grooves for locks cut in? I know a guy in a (non auto) machine shop....still plenty of mills and lathes though
And has anyone ever heard of 2040 Auto parts? I've heard reports that there site could be a scam.

Never heard of them, but a quick google search shows a number of scam reports on different car forums. Is this the place you mentioned that is listing Engnbldr exhaust valves for the Slant 6? If so, that's pretty suspicious as Engnbldr appears to have closed down in 2018. I seem to remember hearing that they stopped producing the 1.70/1.44 Slant 6 valves some time before they shut down completely. SI is the only current source I know for the 1.70/1.44 valves.

Yes, 273/318 intake valves are 1.78", but I used Ford valves. The length is better and they weigh a little less with 11/32" stems. Most heads need guides anyway so the cost difference is minor. Just valve locks and stem seals need to be replaced.

This place has alot of 1 of this, 1 of that type of stuff for many brands, think I saw something on their site for dusenberg, something else for hudson, etc. They showed 1 set of /6 enginebuildr /6 exhaust valves I looked thru pages of stuff and never found any intake valves to match. I later saw some kind of post (don't remember where) to beware of this place. I had sent them an email asking if they might ea set of the intakes, and that I was interested in the exhausts anyway and intakes if they had them. Still waiting for a reply a few weeks later.

I just sent a cam into Oregon Cams for a regrind, they deal with SI Valves, Ive requested a quote from there, along with my regrind.
