As some might know I am rebuilding my slant 6 on my boat. We all know windage is the problem. I was thinking of making a custom pan, but I have an offer for a rear sump pan from a D150. With a boat always at an angle tilted to the back, windage it a major problem, because at idle and running, the oil will always be at the back. Will the D150 pan be a good solution? Probably still add baffles. What is a fair price for an oil pan?

I've had 1 marine engine over the years. A 318. It had a full length sump. Not saying it was absolutely mandatory, but that's what it had.
Not saying that it was a good price or bad but I bought a D150 pan over the summer and I paid $50 with the pickup tube. Seemed fair to me. And no shipping involved, met the seller in town. Shipping could kill a deal.

I have seen on ebay a full length 225 oil pan. $350+. I was thinking of making a custom pan, but not sure that would be necessary. The pan I was looking at would be face to face purchase, Pick up tube I think has rust so not really good. Rock auto has tube for $35 Canadian, plus ship. I may just mod my own tube. He is asking $100 for the pair. I was thinking $80 canadian.

location can make a difference. How bad is the pickup tube rusted? If not real heavy I would try and clean it up. or buy a new one. (use that as negotiation "bait")
take the PN of the new pickup and check Ebay, might find a better deal than $35 for a new pickup. I don't think that I would try to mod the original one. not worth it for what the new one costs. and likely the tube is a different length as the right one for the truck pan, besides being bent differently.

For $300 you should be able to get a complete truck engine, easily. They made millions of the trucks so the rear sump pan should be fairly cheap. At Car show and flea markets should be able to get one for $20-30. Sometime if you are pressed for time you have to pay more than that but never near $300. $50 would be at the top of my scale. Your scale may vary

I like the idea of the rear sump truck pan and matching pickup. I do not think you would need baffles or windage tray if you have that.

I love these statements. They made millions of flathead Ford V8s too. How many of them are in the junkyards? 0. The same for rear sump pans for a \6. The D series trucks used to litter the junkyards, not so much anymore.

Point taken , but the last trucks were made in 87. When was the last flathead made? My point is that I see them pretty regularly at the swap meets. If you need it in a hurry that is not an option. There will be less and less of all this stuff as the clock keeps ticking away!

Thanks all. GregCon, If I were even just a bit closer to Houston I would take you up on that Coke and a motor. But I am 1500 miles north in Manitoba Canada. Up here, rust takes most metal toys. So wreckers don't even have them any more. Price of scrap up here is very high, so more and more bone yards are looking thin. Not a single place here would have much older than 1995. Many years ago, our DMV pulled every vehicle off the road that was older than 95 if it was in any sort of accident. The only saving grace was a few years later, they added a Classic Car division of license, but had to be 25 years old or older. All for the emissions.

Well the $300 was for a boat pan, which is the full length of the block. I went with the D body pan and will pick it up tomorrow for $80 with the pickup tube. The tube is OK but the screen is rusted through the top I think from the pictures. If I have to, I will just use my pickup screen on the mid sump and put it on the longer tube.

Pulled the block out of the boat today. It was 71 Degrees today! Tomorrows high is 17. NOT FAIR!
