We had great weather and good racing action at the 26th Annual Mopar Southern Classic at Kentucky Dragway in Clay City, KY this weekend!
We had 6 racers show up for the fun. Unfortunately, Lukus Bruner threw the #1 connecting rod on his first time trial, so we had 5 racers contending for points.
On Saturday Lou Madsen won in his turbocharged 68 Dart 4 door with Rodney Hargis runner up.
Joel Harris was third, adding more points to his success from the first ever AHRA Slanted Nationals the week before at Sikeston, MO.
Isiah Bruner and the Kentucky Poser rounded out the Motley Crew. The Poser kept trying to get other people to drive ToadRacer, but no one would take him up on it.
Sunday was a quick turn around and they got us out of there about the time the event flyer said we would be starting eliminations. That made it an easier drive home for everyone.
Rodney Hargis won Sunday with Joel Harris hot on his heels, adding even more points for 2021.
Lou was third with Isiah and the Poser bringing up the rear again.
Next up on the list is our season finale at the Mopar Muscle Dragfest in London, KY the weekend of 16-17 October. This marks the first year for a points race at this track. Long time Mopar and Slant 6 race coordinator Bobby Rogers is helping run the show there now, so this should be a great event.
The Leader Board going into the finale has Rick Covalt at 110 with Lou Madsen now hot on his heels with 105. Greg Ondayko is in third with 85, followed by Joel Harris with 65 and Rodney Hargis at 60.
We'd better start a Roll Call for the London race so we can make some predictions on who's going to be our 2021 National Champion.
Will Rick make that long tow to defend his #1 spot, or will he let Lou take it away from him? Lou has now won points at 5 events, so he has to start giving up points to the over 5 rule, making it a little more difficult to advance. Lou said he plans to attend, so with only 5 points down on Rick, all he has to do is show up to the two day event to win it. Are ya readin' this Rick...!?
Greg Ondayko is well within reach too, but he's got just as long of a tow to get there as Rick.
Joel told me he doesn't currently plan to go to London, but he's been winning quite a bit lately and I think he likes it...
And then there's Rodney Hargis who is familiar with the London track and has been known to win a race or two over the last 23 years of this Slant 6 drag racing series. He could show up and win both days to take it as well. He's done it before...
I'm gonna go start a Roll Call...
Here are the updated 2021 points going into the season finale:
