Measuring your converter stall is the very first step, and who knows if you need another cam or not? Do you want to carry on a conversation in the Ruster thread? What cam (specs) are you running in that car?

For what's it's worth I'm using #218 in my street car which has 9.25 comp and still able to run cheap gas.
Long trips I can still squeak out 22 miles per gallon.

218 is a nice setup for 9.25:1 (226@0.050" on int and exh, 0.459" lift). I like the 346 grind a lot (8 deg more intake dur and 0.030" more lift) and it seems to work very well from about 9:1 to 10:1. 10:1 needs premium gas.

I believe it was Lou that recommended the 346 cam when my engine was out for a rebuild four years ago. Previously I had an unknown cam that didn't idle well below 1000 rpm, would happily turn up past 6000 rpm., and pulled real hard 4K to 6K. However it was bothersome for street use. I have a 2300-2600 stall converter, 3.55:1 8 3/4 Suregrip, 9.6:1 compression, ported head with ENG builder oversized valves, bored 40 over with an old Holley 390 4v carb, Clifford short intake, and headers. The car ran OK no great shakes, seemed kind of lazy off the line and happy to spin up to 5500 rpm with the 346 grind, but it was much happier driving experience during around town driving.

That was then, this is now with a new FITeck 4V EFI system (#30003 400 hp) installed last week. The car is now very snappy off the line, pulls much stronger in first and second gear, and throttle is very responsive going down the road. It's like having a new larger displacement engine. Apparently the little Holley's primaries were not flowing enough and was never at the ideal air fuel ratio. The engine idles smoothly at 750 rpm cold or hot. The lash is set at around 0.026" I & E if I recall correctly. This new setup is a pleasure to drive.

Glad to hear another 346 cam is working well! I suggest 0.019" Int and 0.026" Exh valve lash. That has worked well for me on that cam. Not much different than what you are doing, but might be a bit quieter.

I have to revisit the lash to see just where it is. The valve train is noisy, and anything much tighter causes a skip or in inconsistent fuff-fuff from one or more of the rear three cylinder's exhaust valve. I have never been able to figure out which of the three is the offender. I have duel exhaust.

Currently no fuff-fuffing with the lash as it is now set. I will take into consideration your lash settings, as a bit quieter top end is preferable.
