 Post subject: My slant build up!

Working on a slant build up for a 73 dart sport daily driver and have a few questions:
Build up-73 stock slant block
Gasket matched,polished heads
stock valves and springs
offy 4 bbl. intake
holley 390
dutra duals
Comp cams 264s
cox bros roller timing chain
true 9.2-1 comp ratio.
8 1/4 rear with 3.21 shure grip
Well thats what i got for now,here are my questions:
tranny:what are my options here,is there any other auto. trans i could stuff behind this mill besides a 727 or 904? if not what should i do to beef up this trans?
exhaust:who has a true dual exhaust?what size is each pipe?and how much did it cost?
timing chain:anyone know how much the cox bros piece cost?
thats it for now!

The 904 trans can be rebuilt using V8 parts and that will be plenty strong for your Slant.
A nice trick is to install the "wide ratio" gears out of an 81 and later 904, that will give the car a lower first gear.

As for the Cox Bros. roller chain / gears, I think they are around $100.00 for the set.

I have duals - 2" headpipes, 1-3/4" tails. Big mistake, (sounds like crap, doesn't scavenge well - crossover and small glasspacks at the end of the pipes helped with the crummy sound) next time will Y into a nice big 2-1/2" single exhaust.

I've got Clifford headers into 2" pipe all the way back. I use Walker super turbos and they sound great and not too loud on the parkway. The headers were a gift. I think they are about $200, but would be cheaper for your car because the '68 and up have more options. The mufflers were $40 ea. and the exhaust cost me $210 to install. Again, yours will probably be cheaper 'cause I have a 4 speed and it was tough getting the two pipes past the clutch "Z" bar. :?

I also need a reccomendation on a good flowing muffler but has manners at WOT,can anyone help me? ALso i think i am going to y pipe it into a 2 1/2 in. pipe!

My Valiant had a 2-1/2" full length pipe and 3 chamber 40 series Flowmaster, it sounded very nice without being loud.

There's enough room for two 2" pipes to go from the dutra duals in a 1967-1976 A-body...we have bigger engine bays to work in. I run a '76 Feather Duster and have that setup with no 'H' pipe. One pipe goes straight to the back, and the other wraps under the 'notch' in the oil pan just in front of the flywheel inspection plate (just like an F-body exhaust does).

It's 'tight' but not that bad. I'll snap some pics tonight when I get home from work....

My sons Dart has MP. 6X1 header, into a flowmaster Y pipe with 2- 2 1/2" pipes the whole way back. Mufflers are Hooker ( can't remember the model but I can find it if you need it) and this system sounds great. Not to loud but certainly not quiet. He has had to open the hood on more than one occasion to prove it was not a 340. Pretty cool!!

PS. If you are going to run dual exhaust, make it functional for yourself. We kept the right side crossover back far enogh that we could pull the tranny without droping the exhaust if we needed to.

I recommend the dynomax Super Turbo - affordable, quieter than flowmasters, and sounds good. It will probably not last quite as long, but I got about 60k miles and 8 yrs out of my last one. I went to a Thrush turbo, which is good too, but slightly louder. I have a 3-chamber 3" single exh on my '64 and it is a little too loud for me.

A single 2 1/2" system for a medium-built motor as you suggest is best in all aspects except for the "look" of duals. The single system will weigh less and be cheaper/easier to build.

IMHO, HP and TQ numbers only mean something in meaningless debates, or for comparison with your own setup to improve it (like with dyno numbers on your car after modifying). The proof is in the pudding - dragstrip times or some other sort of racing. Making your car as light as possible will give you benefits that are nearly free, and you can make up HP numbers to impress people with when your car is fast... :wink:

Why not get a dual outlet muffler or "Y" the system after the muffler and run two smaller tailpipes? That way you have a great single exhaust system with the look of duals. That's what I plan to do with the Duster...
