So both my dizzys have some serious play in the dizzy gear. I have a new gear here now (plastic as on original). I’ve read through the articles on how to install it. Drill holes etc etc. However, I’m not quite clear on one thing. How do you line up the gear teeth to make sure it’s in the right position? Do you just use the old one as a reference? It’s on my 78 d100

You can use the old one, but I have never bothered to do that. When you install the dist, you will have to time it with a light anyway, and you can only be off/different by a fraction of a tooth, so you will just rotate the dist a little bit one way or the other when you set the timing.

Thanks for the help. Seems easy enough. On the same note. I need to replace the bushings while I am in there. I’ve seen that the bushing are said to be 5/8 od and 1/2 ID. Is that correct? It’s 78 d100 with a 225

Can't help you with the bushing sizes, but O-rings, yes; see here.

I would suggest not replacing the bushings. They are often a tiny bit loose, but serviceable. I don't believe I've ever seen ones that are worn out except on heavily damaged/abused dists. Why do you think they are bad? Better to find a good used dist if necessary.

Electronic distributors generally don't have a problem with the bushings. High milage points distributors do. The spring for the points keeps a side load on the shaft which does wear the bushings.
The part number for the OEM bushing and thrust washer package (1963) is 2275 228. This is just an example. There are different part numbers for different distributors. Need to know the number on the distributor.
There is a member on FABO that rebuilds distributors, and might have bushings available, if you really need them. Member name is halifaxhops

I’m just thinking that while I have it out, a spare dizzy, that it would be a good idea to change it. So what you are saying is just leave it be? I’ve seen the spec says more than 6thou of side play to replace them.

That’s a idea, however I would not like to join another forum just to ask about bushings
