In the process of assembly of the short block and noticed the huge cam end play. Reading the Dutra book, and he mentions that the oil pump gear and cam lobe angle have been designed to locate the cam correctly, then shows a method of fabricating spring and ball arrangement to stop cam walk, then gives no recomendation, just goes on with assembly procedure.

This is a very mild driver build. What have you guys done? Cam button or no cam button?

I have run many engines and never had trouble with this. I started putting buttons on a few years ago because everybody says to (as a preventive measure), but I've never had trouble without a button. All my engines turn over 5500 RPM on a regular basis...

That said, as Stan said, our friend Badvert sells those buttons for cheap and they look easy to install and use! So, why not?

A cam button does not make a harm if well build. But it either doesnt solve problem based of bad quality cam. I have such an issue with my custom gring from Oregon Grind Cams. It eats the oil pump gear like bread. I asked a new core and they used old which has re-grinded oil pump gear. There is machining problem in a cam and it has coarse surface which cuts the oil pump gear in "record speed".

I try to buy an old slant with no rebuild. I will do the old cam to my specs and use the old Mopar oil pump gear to the new pump.

And then I add a cam button.

I had my cam done by Oregon. I hope I dont run in to the problem stated by IGU32. I did read in Dutras book that the oil pump gears on modern replacement pumps could be a problem. I plan to run my original pump even though it shows quite a bit of wear. I plan to set it up with the transmission on a homemade run stand and turn it over with the plugs out until I see (or don't see...) oil pressure. The popularity of Oregon Cams for slant sixes that I see on the net makes me pretty confident that the cam will be fine.

On the pump gear itself? The cam gear or both? I'd be careful with any wear on either gear.
