Dear Slanters,

Just thought I would give a heads up that I will be taking my 66 Valiant (AKA "Project V") to the Blue Ridge SCCA autocross at the Salem Civic Center this Saturday, May 11. I'll be there by 9 AM and probably leave around 4 PM. Events 3 and 4 are front and center on the homepage below, if you want to pre-register or see event details.

http://brr-scca.org/

The car now has port EFI on a moderately built up aluminum 225, and fairly fresh sticky tires all around. Should be fun to put it through its paces. Last time I tried an autoX with this car the carb was cutting out on hard right turns, so my times were pretty tepid.

Best,
Lou

Hopefully your Local Mark's can make it out.

I would love to go, but still wrapping up enfs on projects here. There has not been a lot of Slant Crossing for a while , I hope to get back to it soon when I have my Green car Sorted again!

Have a great time. The backdrop to the north west there is fantastic.

Thanks, Greg! Mark or Brian might possibly come, but Mother's Day weekend is making that more challenging. Victoria has to work graduation events on Saturday anyway, so...

Brian and his Mom Susan are coming too! Susan can ride along with each of us for a run or two as well. She loves spirited driving...

Will do! Susan Mimken is great fun. Brian said she may be a better driver than he, and definitely better than his dad Nick. Still remember taking her for a ride in the fully healthy 64 Dart back in 2010 or so. She was havin' all sortsa fun...

Sounds fun Lou! Wish I could make that work this weekend. Looks like it's only 4ish hrs from us, i'd love to come watch. Hope the weather is nice and the car/engine do great. If you get any pictures, would love to see some. Especially if Brian goes full Mimken!

Fantastic time with Brian and Susan Mimken and the BRR crew yesterday. Wating for times to post, but as I recall Brian went about 45.6 sec best run in the 2023 Challenger 345 w/6spd. I went 45.1 sec on 2-3 runs after a soft first run at 48 sec. More in it, but I kept goofing a little here and there. Still, not bad for what Brian and I were driving, and there were plenty of subarus and some miatas in the mid 40 sec time range. Fastest cars were in the low 40s and a very few in the high 30s. Susan got to ride a few runs with Brian and 2 runs with me. She verified that I had no oil pressure drop on the hard downhill right handers on the course. Yay baffles!

The Valiant was easy to drive through the autoX course and was nice over the road. Autoxers loved it. 3200 RPM at 75 MPH and not too loud. One bummer is that I blew another QuadSpark channel and had to drive home without cylinders 2 and 5. I need to figure this out... I also need to weigh the car with the alum engine and GV OD.

Thanks for chiming in, Greg, Dennis, and Andrew. More fun to come...

Happy Slant Sixing!
Lou

Good report.
Fun times.
Hope you get the quad spark sorted.

Seems like it must be a setting in tunerstudio somehow?

Charrlie:

Lou Runs an a904 in front of that gv OD unit.

Thanks. I was not aware that the car had a GV unit, so wondered about the trans.

Thanks for asking, Charlie. I had always wanted to try a GV and made that happen a few years back. Use the highbeam footswitch to run it. Pretty neat. With 3.80 rear gear it steps down to 2.96. 904 auto w/manual valve body and 2800 stall edge converter. Still using the factory column shifter, which I really like.

I dug out my spare/new Quadspark unit this morning and will install that this week. I ordered another spare and will call Matt Cramer to discuss WTF is up. I tried changing dwell setting in Tunerstudio, but I guess that didn't help. I also sorted out the dipstick. I'll drain the oil to measure the volume in there, then refill it. It may have 8-10 qts in there? No leaks so far!

If the weather is good, I'll still drive the V to MD on Sat morn. Very interested to see what this combo will run on the 1/4 mile, and measure the hwy MPG. Feels pretty snappy (and smooth) for what's in the motor!

Lou

That's awesome Lou! I did not know you had a GV. Was it the one that was behind that big cubicinch Slant you had?

Hey Dennis,

Yeah, pretty easy install, after some judicious bashing with a 5 lb sledge behind the trans X-member (an inch or so up and on each side). Much easier than cutting and welding and the paint barely cracked off. The GV tech/help guy actually said it would fit 63-66 A's w/o tunnel mods, and I told him no way, but he insisted. Guess who was right... I got a new driveshaft of course.

The GV did not come with another deal. That 253" (IIRC?) motor I just bought w/o anyting extra, and now Ryan C has it.

Lou
