Will do about to head down to the garage shortly. Once I get it off besides checking the end that touches the cam should I pull the bottom cover off and look for anything loose in there? Never had one apart before

Pulled the fuel pump and the spring was intact and tight, the arm was clean with some normal wear and the cam love was smooth with visible wear but couldn't feel it. I hate trying to downsize photos and hate this site gives so much trouble with photos so here is a video of the fuel pump stuff I mentioned.

Pulled the timing cover and everything was right on the timing set with no signs of rubbing on the cover. The chain didn't have anymore slack than when I first installed it, it maybe has 100-200 miles on it. It's acloyes. The oil slinger ring was loose on the keyway could this be it? Wouldn't the balancer press against the skimmer and hold it tight? I pressed the balancer on as far as I could and three belt lined up perfect with the water pump. I assume it would not be good to run the motor without the spinner as Chrysler likely put it there for a reason. Should I try cutting another keyhole for the slinger that fits the key exactly?

I think the oil slinger is the culprit! I put the cover back on and tapped the slinger with a screw driver and I could hear it making noise up through the head. Any suggestions on ways to keep it tight so I can know for.sure this was the noise? I can try using some more washers on the bolt I used to reinstall the balancer with to ensure the bolt wasn't bottoming out a slight bit too early

I've left them out before and suffered no ill consequences.

I may do just that. I was reading through a few threads that it was there to prevent flooding the front seal and with today's seals that isn't really an issue

Yes, the slinger is usually sandwiched pretty tight between the balancer and the lower timing gear. I think you could leave it off with no noticeable consequences. FYI, I recently tore down a 1985 slant six (truck) and it did NOT have an oil slinger. I am pretty certain that it had never been apart before I disassembled it. I would leave it off just to eliminate it as a problem. My slant race motor doesn't have one on it.

Cool I think that might be the plan. Really hoping this is it as it would be an easy fix! My other thought was to buy another slinger and install two to make sure it fits tight.

Shouldn't need to double up on slingers—a single slinger that isn't wallowed out ought to do the job. Like this one.

Too many people who were born on third base actually believe they've hit a triple.

I had a big block making a weird rattle at idle. It almost sounded like a diesel idling.Noise went away when you revved the engine up. The slinger was in backwards and rubbing the timing chain.

I was pretty sure I made sure to install it correctly when I replaced the timing chain and that was the case after I pulled the cover last weekend. I think the balancer just needed to go on a little bit more to hold the slinger in place. I suspect my bolt used to press the balancer back on bottomed out just before it was fully on, a good reason to just use the hammer it back on method vs the bolt.... just kidding haha. I will add a few more washers next time when putting it back on.

I hope to get everything back together this weekend now that I have the gaskets and some time.

*Side note ordered a Mahle oil pan gasket from Rock Auto with several other gaskets I needed since shipping was $12.99 whether I ordered one gasket or several and the oil pan gasket was missing the rear rubber seal but had 4 metal exhaust manifold exhaust port gaskets in the pack. Rock auto gave me a store credit but only refunded me like $4.00 in shipping because they said they divided the shipping among the other parts I ordered even though if I had just ordered that gasket it would have been $12.99 to ship. A little frustrating since they sent an incomplete part.

​the noise is gone and I went ahead and flushed the radiator and block while I was at it, adjusted the valves, fine tuned the idle screws, and adjusted the timing. Took it for a short ride and it seems to be running well! Thanks for everyone's help!
