Hi guys:

For thirty years I have been annoyed by my broken emergency brake lever. I have cut my head more than I can count on the sharp metal where the plastic broke away.

I've tried removing the roll pin various times over the years with no success. I have a machine shop and could've made something, but never got around to it...now the car is torn down and I want to finally fix this issue. I started looking online at roll pin removal presses and came across a motorcycle chain breaker at Harbor Freight that looked like it might work or be easily modified so that it would.

So I bought one for I think $14.95 or less. It worked perfect with no modification. The factory roll pin is 3/16"(.1875") and the press is .157" pin press.

Anyway, if any of you have ever wanted an easy way to remove the roll pin, here is a $15 example.

I found that the T-handle from a Hurst shifter fits perfectly on the e-brake shaft, and the hole for the pin even lines up.
It's beefy enough to give a hard pull. My reproduction plastic handle broke the first time I used it.
Now if I can just get my emergency brake to grab, I can get a darn sticker for the ragtop. The shoes are new, so I think they need to get bedded in to the rear drums.

I just use a punch or a roll pin punch with the handle pulled out in the Brake position. Always worked well for me.

Er-rruhhhh…the inside of an A-body is body-hostile enough in a crash as it is. Knee hits stock plastic handle = banged-up knee, sore for awhile. Knee hits heavy aluminum handle = shattered kneecap. Much more pain and disability.

I understand Dan, And appreciate your wisdom. But the honest truth is that if we really placed a high priority on safety we would all be driving cars that are at least 40 years newer. I'm pretty sure the airbag in my 65 Valiant has been disabled by a previous owner.

That's it exactly. I got a carpstorm when I tried to be extra super polite about that in re a guy who got on the board some years ago asking for advice about using a '63 Valiant as a daily driver to cart his young child around.
