How many Time runs do they give you for the big bucks races in your area of the world?

1 per class Saturday. 1 Sunday for a new entry, off the trailer if you raced Saturday.

It ain't for the timid.....

That's how it is here too.
I feel there should be at least 2 passes for the Time Trials.

How do ya formulate a dial in with one datum?

WAG I suppose?

Yes, I lost Sunday in Pro here. I had dialed a 8.20 and lost with 8.19 with a nice .020 light. Why did I loose? Yes I know I broke out because I had to guess at my dial in. We had 106 cars in the class and they only gave us 1 time run. On my time run I felt the car not hook up right and it had a 1.85 60 ft and a 8.34 run. I tried to look at old runs with similar conditions, but that is at best a guess. I guessed 1/100th to high! I really needed that 2nd time run. :?

I liked the way they ran races back in the '70's. My home track opened the gates at 8 am on Saturday. Time trials started about 9 am. They had someone at the tail of the staging lanes, guiding cars into the lanes. when those two lanes were full they were closed, and cars were allowed into the next pair of lanes, and so on. I forget whether there were 10 or 12 lanes. When they pulled the cars from the lanes, they emptied lanes 1 and 2, then emptied lanes 3 and 4 and started refilling lanes 1 and 2. And so on down the line. Time trials lasted almost all day. Then eliminations started late in the afternoon, and ran until done. They did try to be finished by midnight. Just an example of the number of time shot you could get. I had a friends wife practice in my Z/sa 65 Valiant. Her first time racing. Granted it was a slower day, but she made something like 23 runs. She was runner up in stock eliminator, that night, and the next week she won in Stock. That track ran TnT on Thursday night, Class racing on Saturday, and Bracket racing on Sunday. You could get enough runs, to be able to try different things to improve the car.

The problem at Mason Dixon is that Elmer wants to be done in 4 or 5 hours. That is just crazy, especially on a big race weekend. Plus they only ran two classes. Super Pro, and Pro/Modified. No sportsman and no Street or trophy. Yes my class had 106 cars but there was not 100 in Super. Plus everything was 1/8 mile. There was plenty of time to have 2 time runs and be done at 8:00PM. Sorry for complaining. At least they are still open. :D

When I ran at Havana in the 80s you could get as many time runs as you wanted. 41 used to be the same way until the county started screwing with them about noise. When we were there getting Annette ready for her trip to Clay City we literally pitted in staging. She made 22 runs that night.

I seem to do better dialing off the trailer than I do after time runs.

This is me trying to race yesterday at Coles County.

First time run tried to stage in 2nd gear. Transbrake will not set, pushed out of the beams.

Second time run went better. Was .019 red, but the car ran exactly what it did last pass at 41.

First round of Pro. Draw a Cutlass dialed at 6.55, I was at 8.08. Both leave green, at the big end he is not even close at what I believe is the mph stripe. I let off and his win light comes on. Timecard says: I welded him at the tree, .008 to his .088, but I only ran 8.19@76. Let him around me by .007. Talking to my buddy Tony who races there all the time, what I thought was the MPH trap is really the 594' clocks. DOH!

Even if I had legged it out I was going to be safe anyway.

I have the tree end fairly well handled, just got to figger out the big end now.

The first round was my 8th pass in the car this year, so we're getting there.

The bright side is that I unhooked the front end limiters altogether. It made a huge difference in the way the car feels off the starting line. Didn't seem to make much difference timewise, but my 2 60 foot times were within .0012. I'm happy with that.

All in all it was a great day at the track. Picked up my buddy Randy on the way down, and pitted with other buddy Tony and his Mustang.

Only dark spot was a trailer tire that threw a cap about 30 miles into the trip. Safely hobbled it to the next exit and put the spare on. Rolled the dice and made the rest of the trip without a trailer spare. First thing tomorrow will be a call to the tire guy for new trailer shoes.

I've known Randy for 40+ years. We used to race together back in the 80s and 90s before he got married. We built a 70 Corvette for him in the late 80s. I let his youngest daughter {19} drive the Valiant at 41 a couple years ago. She had a ball.

Tony's dad Larry is my original racing buddy. I've known him for 50+ years, and Tony since he was born, also 50 years. Larry is 80 now and his health is failing. Tony and his son took his race car away this year because it just wouldn't be safe to let him drive it.

Time is a cruel mistress.

Good times, Zilla!
Glad you had a good time in spite of the tire.
None of us are getting younger.
