I am working at a 24 Hours Of Lemons race at Road America in Wisconsin. I just got to put eyes on a Dodge Magnum station wagon with a mid engine slant six. It is pretty well done. The slant six is set so far Back the harmonic balancer is even with the windshield wiper motor.

I talked to the guys just a little bit at the block party last night. They are running a T5 transmission. I don’t know if I will have time to chat with them today. It’s a big race with a lot of cars and I will be pretty busy. I will find out more if I can. The guys are all dressed up like Richard Petty with the hat and feathers and stuff. It was featured for a few seconds in one of the Lemons wrapup videos. Hallett, Oklahoma race I believe.

I'll admit to this thing being my brainchild. I lurked here quite a bit while building this thing. I get asked why a lot. Best answers I've come up with is "Because Lemons" or "Because Beer" After a few beers and some time with a sawzall and a welder, my brother and I had a core engine roughed in and we knew it could work.

The car was a flood car that I came into possession of for precisely zero dollars. It was apparent that if this tank was going to have any shot at being competent on the track we were going to need to do something different than how it came from factory. I also wanted to build a Class C car that would reward good driving and punish bad driving. So the goal was never to make it a power house. I also have a rotation of drivers that are at various skill levels, I cannot claim to be the best of the lot. This car is a way for everyone to skill up.

It handles like a dream and is super predictable. Suspension believe it or not is still factory control arms, springs, and junk yard shocks. We trimmed the front coils a bit. I actually love driving this thing in the rain if given the opportunity. The weight distribution is 49 Front / 51 Rear.

While provisions for a turbo exist, I've not bolted one on yet. It dynos out at 156 HP / 192 ft lbs at wheels NA, super mild rebuild, 8:1 compression knowing some day we'd likely boost it, with a focus on reliability and oil control. Running MS3X for engine management, sequentially fired and injected. I horse traded for an external single stage oil pump, we build a custom pan and scraper to make it all work and keep it low.

We run a T5 from a V6 SN97 Mustang, which is a shorter trans overall with a remote shifter and non-slip yoke output which is nice. I also of course had many conversations with Bryce Gill along the way who was awesome in sharing his knowledge.

We've created many problems for ourselves to solve, some yet to be discovered, but it has been a fun journey. You can see some live streaming here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMWMVrue0-s&t=28803s

Awesome and thanks for sharing. Might be interested in driving/wrenching/pitting sometime. I'm from Madison, WI originally...

Cheers,
Lou

Very cool! Thanks for chiming in. I wish we had more time to chat at the race.

Wow, that sounds like quite a unique setup with the mid-engine slant six in a Dodge Magnum station wagon! It must be fascinating to see the craftsmanship and engineering that went into such a build. Have you had the chance to speak with the owner about the car and learn more about their inspiration behind this setup? It's always interesting to hear the stories behind these custom builds at racing events like the 24 Hours of Lemons.
