So today I was feeling confident, and I successfully removed the hood by myself.
Not too difficult, I just took my time and put some blankets between the hood and the windshield.
So this project is a bit closer.

That is a tricky job to do yourself with an F-J-M Body, I am guessing you left the hood hinges attached to the car? When you try to pull the hood off with the hinges attached, the Cowl panel gets dented from the inside.

Greg, wouldn't have thought that.

The local yard just got a 79 volare in a couple of weeks ago. I've been watching it sit. still hasn't made it "in" the yard still along the outer fence.
Ive seen this car sit for years in town. Showing 38k on the odo
I'm thinking as long as I seen it "not move" in town for years and years Im thinking it could be 1st time around.... I remember leaving my name and # under the wiper a few times 15-20 years ago (never got a call) and it showed 38k miles and change, "then".
Doors hood fenders trunk are NICE. But I dont need.....
I did get the solid "in one piece" 77 grill out of it.... made it home intact.
got the super 6 setup, the AC brackets and the brand new looking radiator from it too.... I'm sure these guys already turned the title into the state to be converted to "junk" title. They dont sit on them long at all before doing this.... Ive tried buying whole vehicles from them before.
Don't need doors or fenders, I have plenty... but I wish I had a place to stash them for "trade bait" at least....
I needed at least the KD linkage and I got all of it... including the lever on the trans. now, maybe I won't have to use a Lokar cable on my truck... only issue is Im gonna have to add a little length to it to compensate for the '60s era /6 to SB trans adapter plate setup. may cut the link and weld an extension into it or something.... not to that point yet/
want to go back tomorrow and get some parts off the 84 D100/150 (whichever it is) that also recently showed up there. It's already been cannibalized but (hate to say I know who did the cannibalization) they left me a few goodies I can use on either my 83 or my 85...

Cool find Don!

So today, I removed the battery negative cable, the ground cable from the firewall, and the starter.
So it looks like all that's left is the engine to trans blts, and the motor mounts, and I can pull the tired slant six.
Is that right, or have I missed something?

So it looks like I'm almost ready to pull the engine.

Torque converter bolts, engine to tranny bolts, and the motor mounts, is that it?
I'm pretty sure everything else is removed or out of the way.

Yes I'll put something under the tranny to support it.

Any suggestions?

I support the trans with a floor jack or ratchet strap. Sometimes I even use one of the Harbor Freight trans jacks.

I just thought about the power steering pump. I know I need to loosen the belt, is that all I need to do?

Loosen the belt and unbolt the pump from the engine ( eigther pump and/or bracket). Lay aside without unhooking the hoses.

So now the power steering pump is out of the way.

What about the fuel pump, and the distributor?

Disconnect the fuel line going to the pump, right?

Disconnect the fuel line at the pump that comes from the tank. Should be electronic ign (correct?) just unplug the plug at the distributer, and any wireing that runs along the rocker cover that is fasentened to the engine. Make sure the ground strap at the rear of the engine to the firewall (if it has one) is disconnected. Remove the alternator from the mounting bracket and lay aside. Of course throttle linkage and kickdown linkage, needs to be disconnected from the engine. If air conditioning, unbolt the compressor and lay aside. Leave the hoses connected. Bungie cords and odd pieces of wire are handy for tieing items out of the way. Be carefull of the trans cooler lines, where they pass the engine. I like to remove the fan.

Fuel pump hoses are disconnected, distributor wire disconnected, the rad fan was already out.

Everything else Charrlie mentioned was already removed/disconnected.

Before removing the converter bolts, get a can of spray paint and spray one of the converter/flex plate ears through the starter hole. Makes it easier when putting it back together. The converter and flexplate only match up one way. If you have luck line me, you would get 3 bolts in and the 4th would not have the holes line up.
Along those lines, you might want to consider replacing the trans front seal, while the engine is out.
