GREETINGS ALL!!! :P

I stumbled across this forum quite a few years ago when I started really gain an interest in engines, especially inline 6s, then specifically the Slant Six. Life being what it is and the overabundant population of "squirrels" (inside joke, see movie “UP”, ref "Doug" :P ), it remained a mental exercise/fascination that I would revisit from time to time. One of the "Life" issues that kept this exercise from moving forward was the lack of a decent shop to work on it in. Fortunately now I have such a place, so now it is time to move this exercise from "mental" to a physical. :D

Like any gearhead(real or imagined :P ) I had many dreams/ideas go through my mind of what I wanted to do, so I researched everything that caught my fancy and over time sifted through it all until I figured out what really got me jazzed and wanted to build. And one thing that always stuck in my mind is the small, seemingly little regarded white paper that Doug published so many moons ago. "The Stroker 170 Slant Six

Premise:
170ci LG block ('68-'69)
Bored over 0.050"
Upgraded Camshaft
Lightweight Pistons
Ported Head
198 Forged Crankshaft
Fuel Injection
Individual Throttle Bodies
Supercharger
Dutra Duals Exhaust Manifold

Scratch your heads and go ahead and ask all the "Why?!" questions. :P
My reply will be "Why not. :P " One problem though.... I think everyone knows just how hard it is to find a 170ci Slant Six nowadays. :P So I am reaching out to everyone here for help in finding a '68-'69 LG 170ci engine. Any information leading to the discovery and capture of said Unicorn would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Fiakus :)

Sounds like a fun project. Here are a few questions:

1) What kind of car will you put this into?
2) What is your budget for engine, EFI, boost, and transmission? From what you have written, you should plan on at least $10,000 for a rebuilt engine including EFI system and supercharger. Probably more like $12,000-15,000 if you want all new parts.
3) In case you do not know this, you should be looking for a crank from a 198 Slant 6 to put into your 170 block.

You should put some specifically written posts in the "Parts Wanted" section to ask for the block and crank. 170s were made 1960-1969 (or 1968?) and 198s were made 1969-1974, IIRC.

Lou

Lou,

Thanks for the questions and input. :D
Question 1) What kind of car am I putting this engine in… no clue yet. :P I’m wanting to start with building the engine first, then finding a body to drop it into.
Question 2) Budget? I’m definitely aware that what I want to build is budget intensive however I am looking at this as a long term project to enjoy over time. I had never considered attempting an engine build before a few years ago, but I realized my skills I’vedeveloped over 30+ years as an industrial maintenance technician do translate. :p So I finally decided to gird my loins and do it.

Thanks for the clarification on the 170 year models. I pulled the data originally from a chart from here in the forum. In my haste to make this post I read the chart wrong. :p

I’ll be sure to correct my original post. I did know I will need the 198 forged crank for this but I was hoping to find the 170 with the matching crank because I actually have 3 variants of this 170 built I want to try but the stroker with the super charger is where I want to start.

I have searched online for 170s but they seem quite allusive. But I do know I want the ‘68-‘69 castings because they are reported to be the better ones to use.

Thanks Again,

Erik Z.

I personally doubt the 68-69 170 engines are any better than the early ones. As far as I know there are no differences in the 68-69 170 engine from the 67 down except for the crank shaft
(larger converter pocket).. Unlike the 225 engine that went from 3 freeze plugs to 5 freeze plugs (possibly othe mads as well) the 170 kept 3 freeze plugs untill the end.
PS: I might be able to help you witha 170. Will need to look at what I have. Send me a PM and I will give you my phone number.

170s were made from '60 to '70something, though only for export outside of the US/Canada market after the '69 model year. I mention this because a bunch of years ago there was someone selling off a stash of NOS (in crates) '70-'71-'72 170 short blocks.

198s were '70-'74. US/Canada only, as far as I know.
