Anybody know the fix for when the origional AM radio starts to go all crackely

I have a '67 Dart with the stock AM

I was working fine, but now it's started to go out.

Sometimes it works and then other times it's all crackeling and I can only just about hear the station through the crackeling.

Could it be a capacitor on the power supply ???

Any info is appreciated.

Get a good aftermarket radio.

I agree with Eric. but if you must keep the original radio try removing the radio and cleaning the volume potentiometer with some temrinal cleaner. Chances are that over 37 years you have some corrosion inside the electronics causing voltage drop.

I don't know what your 1968 radio looks like, but the AM only radio in my 1975 Valiant sometimes worked and sometimes not. It turned out to be the big transistor mounted on the front of the radio. Back in 1984 it cost me $5 for a new transistor installed at a local mom-n-pop TV repair shop just down the road from me. The transistor is just held on by one screw and the leads are just plugged in, no soldering necessary.

Some years later I acquired an AM/FM factory A-body radio and the sound was distorted. By this time I had some electronics schooling and worked in electronic repair. I did some checking and one of the two transistors on the front of the radio was bad. I replaced the pair and it is still working fine today.

where did you get your am/fm radio from? Got any more?

The first AM/FM I found in a Duster at a salvage yard back about 1985 and put it in my '75 Valiant at that time. Then I got a 1976 Valiant about 1990 and found a second AM/FM someplace I can't remember, I think it was a different salvage yard in a Valiant Brougham. That second radio was the one that had the bad transistor in it. I fixed it and put it in my 76 Valiant and it still works great today.
I junked the 75 Valiant due to rust a few years ago and sold the radio on Ebay back then.
They are hard to find today. Some years ago (over 10) there was someone selling NOS AM/FM A-body radios in Hemmings but I imagine those are long gone now.

I used these folks to have an old Blaupuntk (sp?) AM/FM/SW radio completely reconditioned. They do good work, 5-year warranty.
