Anyone using the multiple keyway lower gear on a roller timing set?
So I have been fortunate to have the Direct Connection sets and just use an offset pill on the top gear.

With these sets that Jim Cox used to sell the bottom gear has 2 sets of numbers, each different.
Can anyone explain that to me?

Do you use some kind of installation tool to get it on the crank snout?
And then use a puller to remove it and reposition it each time you make a change.

Just trying to see the advantages.
And understand the bottom gear.

Top set of numbers is the timing mark that gets lines up with mark on cam gear that corresponds with inner circle of numbers closest to keyway you're using

They fit extremely tight. Too tight for me. I worked the inside of mine with a piece of emory cloth around a piece of pipe. I worked it like that until I could take my propane torch to the gear and warm it up and then slide it right on. The back side of the gear also needed trimmed back so that the crank gear would line up with the cam gear. I can't remember exactly how much? Maybe .030 0r .060" I'll try and find how much.

Edit:
Quote:
I had the back of the crank gear machined .060 and used a .030 shim behind the cam gear. .090 total misalignment on mine.

Thanks guys.
I will try and measure the inside to see how tight it is going to be.
I hope it's not tighter than the stock one I removed.

And yes I looked at it and figured out the top numbers line up with the cam gear dot.
The inner number is the Advance or Retard you need.

I wont install that set without measurement tools. It is very easy to get one teeth off = random degreeing.

With my latest engine the I the crank snout was thicker than the hole of the timing set. Some "Dremeling" helped me about this. With a loose lower gear the damper bolt is a must.

I am going to see just how tight it is!.
I always check with a degree wheel.
And I use a Bolt.

Mine was extremely tight. I barely got it back off to massage the ID.

I did some measurements and it wasn't too bad.
I used a flap wheel a few times and got it to where it went on with just some light taps.
I bought a large front axle socket and it was perfect to use to tap it home.
And my 3 arm puller will pull it off without much effort.

I took an old damper and opened up the ID so I could easily slide it on and off. I use that and a damper/balancer installer to press the crank timing gear on, then use a nice Craftsman 3-jaw puller to get it off. I sometimes remove a little ID on the crank gear, but not so it is an easy fit and it still presses on with "normal" force.
