The following link is posted on another site about using 15W40 Diesel oil in gas engines. Some interesting observations.

ive ran shell rotella in my dart since it came into the family about 12 years ago. my dad drives a truck and had a 50 gallon drum of it so i always used it. ive never had any problems with it and my car has always run great. im not sure of the mileage on my car but im sure its way over 100,000 and my oil pressure is about 47 psi since my last oil change earlier this week.

I have used few years only 15w-40 diesel oil in my 225. No problems and it has less leaks than other oils.

In preparation for winter, I just changed to Mobil I 5W-30 on my last oil change. Prior, I was using Mobil I 10W-30 mixed with some 15W-50. The engine maintains 50 psi oil pressure with any of these oils. 15W-40 is a relatively heavy weight oil. Do you really need this?

I have lived in southern california most of my life, and so has my dad. We have used ONLY Castrol 20w-50 in our cars. My father put 350,000 miles on his 1986 nissan maxima and would only use Castrol. Not sure if that is a commercial for nissan or Castrol. A godo friend of mine when I was riding motorcycles swears by it as well, says he will only use 20w50 in his cars AND motorcycles, and he was a chief mechanic for Vance & Hines.

He made good points, but I think the point is this. No matter what you use, make sure it is the right RATING for the climate you are driving in. Warm you can use thicker heavier weight oils, in cold you might be forced to use thinner. Make sure you change the oil on a regular basis and take good car of your car and its engine, and you should get years of reliable service from your vehicle.
