Steve, What I do on my push button transmissions is, install the front pump and input shaft from a 68 or newer trans. Then have the converter built with the stall speed I want, and the larger splines and the small pilot on the converter. That way I can use the converter on the early modified trans, the stock late trans, the early engine, or the late engine with a bushing in the end of the crank. The smaller spline part inside the converter is difficult to get for a high stall converter. One thing you cannot do, is use the late style low 1st gear set in the 65 and earlier trans, but the standard ratio gear set swaps right in.

thnx for the info charlie. so, i wont be able to find a converter for the old style tranny?? also how high of a stall would you run in a setup like mine??2800,3000,3500(i realize it will stall lower behind my slant, and w/ the 4:10's it should be locked up @ highway speeds)............steve

I'm not saying you CAN'T get the converter for the early trans, but when I needed to get mine repaired, most of the places I called couldn't do it. I have two different converters. one is a 8 inch, it has a stall about 3100-3200 on my 170 engine. The other one is a 9 1/2 wich has a stall of about 3000. The 9 1/2 was built for nitrous use, it does not have any where near as good a 60 time as the 8 inch, when not on the bottle. The 8 inch will not 60 foot as good as the 9 1/2, when using the bottle. As you can see, there is not much difference in the stall speed of the two converters, but there is a large difference in performance. Stall speed alone does not mean much. Torque multiplcation and effeciancy, are just as important. Call some converter places, tell them what you have, what you want to do, let them tell you what you need.
My 9 1/2 is an "Edge" converter. My 8 inch is an old "TCI" that was rebuilt bt "PTC" last year. I am happy with both. Other people can recommend builders they like.
One of the big things I liked about "Edge". I broke my old converter, just before a big slant race, and couldn't get it repaired, in time. Called "Edge" on Monday morning, with the custom nub and input setup, shipped it "overnite air". I had it on Wednesday noontime. Total cost including shipping was less the $400. Can't beat service like that, and I was a new customer.
