 Post subject: Header Catastrophy

I bought the 6 into 2 headers from Cliffords performance, now i have this issue with the rear header laying right on top of my starter with no room to rout an exhaust, or even completely bolt on the starter. My father and i thought the best thing to do would be to cut and re-weld the header so that it is directed almost straight down in front of the starter...Any Better Suggestions? Thanks...

Did you mention to clifford that the headers are going in a truck when you orderd them? If so they should of known that you had the low starter (below oil pan) and sold you a different set of headers (they have a 6 into 1 set for trucks IIRC).

Either way, call clifford back and explain your situation to them. They may or may not be sympathetic but I would rather haggle a bit and pay return shipping then hacking up a header.

Someone on here recently posted pictures of hooker headers on a truck that looked like a good fit. Also MP previously made 6 into 1 headers that worked on trucks but I am not sure if they are still in production. Keep an eye out on ebay sometimes you can grab them cheap.

Thanks man, the moment i hung those things i knew it was going to be a travesty. I guess i prematurely oredered the parts, i thought the starter was above the pan, but i wasnt home to check it out, but i remember the above or below oil pan option. But like you said i think i will call Cliffords and see what i can do, i dont know if they'll have much sympathy considering i had to nag at them for almost two and a half months to send me my order. Which reminds me to ask who else has ordered parts and how the service was. I ordered my parts mid August and didnt get them untill mid November...I heard they were a good place so i dont want to lose confidence yet. I tried to post a pic of my scenario but i couldnt figure it out...instructions anyone? Thanks a bunch you guys...

People have had various experiences with clifford service. Some have had 0 complaints 0 problems, others have been given the "Yea sure we got it in stock!" and don't get parts for months later routine. So fear not, you aren't the only one. They probably don't move too much /6 products so my guess is they tell you its in stock when it really isn't, then wait until they have accumulated enough orders to make a manufacturing run worthwhile.

If clifford won't take them back then you may be able to sell them at a slight loss and get appropriate headers for your application. Or they may take them back but with a restocking fee.

So would you recomend ebay? Im only sixteen so i havent used the service before...I dont know if that would be better than trying to exchange them for the ones that would fit my power wagon. Im debating getting headers and a set a Dutra Duals. I dont have any other mods on my slant so what would you suggest for my set up? Im trying to set up my truck for hardcore off roading so i dont think the slant will be in there that long, but i want it to be able to get me through the trails untill i have anought money to buy an 8. I also want to see what it would cost for a super six setup... Any ideas what a good deal would be on a 2 BBl intake manifold? Thanks man...

A v8 is another whole can of worms. If your seriously considering putting one in, I honestly wouldn't spend anything on a slant and just keep saving up. But, once you make a peppy slant I think you would like it. Remember a v8 upgrade may cost more then you think because you'll need aditional mounting brackets, different tranny (v8 and /6 trannys have different bolt pattern) and upgraded suspension.

First things first. Deal with clifford on the headers. If they will take them back outright, then deffinately go with dutra duals. That will bypass the whole header headache to begin with. If they won't, ask if they will swap for their truck headers.

The supersix setup includes the stock two barrel manifold. Look in your local junkyards for the late 70's volares and aspens. Also put an add in the parts wanted section of this board and I'm sure you'll get a response soon enough. Remember the kickdown linkage too if your running an auto. I believe a complete setup with a rebuildable carb is in the $100-150 range.

Clifford or offenhauser offers a 2 or 4 barrel slant manifold but they are close to 300 new and that doesn't include any carb or linkages. So if you are on a small budget I'd deffinatley go with the supersix setup.

I definately wanna go with the super six setup, seeing as how i cant get my license for a year ( due to some legal codntions of mine) i wanna make my /6 pretty burly and eventually sell it. I know a few local junk yards so ill look there, in the mean while ill look in the wanted ads in this forum

you can always use a 2 barrel adapter on your 1 barrel setup, if money is tight....

...at which point you may as well save your money for groceries and keep the 1bbl. A 2bbl on an "adaptor" is of no benefit.
