I ned a replacement outside mirror for my 68 Dart. The original has a
rusted seat so remounting the original needs a bit of bodywork.
I have seen generic round rearviws for cheap on some big parts
websites. These are "chromed plastic".

Are these mirrors worth it or are they junk?

They're junk.

Do you want something that passes inspection and works OK for a year or two, or do you want to fix it once and be done with it?

Dan's right, the plastic ones are junk. I'm in Falls Church, VA and you can have my plastic one if you want it. There are plenty of used original on Ebay is you don't want to spend $ on a show quaility piece or reproduction.

Ebay - '64-'66 Mustang reproductions, around $35 for a pair with shipping. I have them on my '65. They are period correct, if not OE correct. Well built chromed metal. Certianly a better deal then way over priced 40 year old originals.

I will try to get the 'stang repros and install them once I fix the rusted
out section. I'm not aiming at a perfect restoration but I want to keep
the "look" of the 60's.

Thanks for confirming that those plastic mirrors are junk. I can just imagine slamming the door in 10 degree weather and having it snap
off!

As a temp fix I reattached the orginal mirror after sanding off the rust from the door. I filled
the pitted area with (I'm on a low budget) Liquid Nails concrete repair.
I bolted the mirror back on with a big washer inside the door to take the
stress off of the rusted area. Then I sealed it with yet more Liquid nails
conc. repair. It's not pretty but it keeps the water out.

The Liquid Nails conc. repair can be applied down to 40 degrees. I don't have a garage so I have to improvise
