The promoter, Jeff Johnson has dropped the Pittsburg Chrysler Classic race. There is a rumor that the Monster Mopar promoter might put on a race at this track but that is still up in the air.

Why not drop the points all together and just race? Seems like a simple solution to the same guys winning all the time.

I won't be around to race for awhile. I haven't seen a single Mopar here in Baghdad yet! But,...
I am still a fan of the Regional idea to get more beginning racers into the series. There are surely a lot of current and potential Slant Six racers out there at local tracks that will likely not make very many if any of the big points races. But just like anything, if you get one guy interested and give him a little attention (like maybe a regional section in the newsletter) he will tell someone else, etc. Maybe "Hometown Racer" has a friend that has the means and ability and is just looking for a new and interesting way to race. He sees "Hometown Racer" getting all excited about seeing his name and maybe even a picture in SSRN and he says to himself, "By golly, I think I'll build myself one of them there Slant Sixes. These fellas seem pretty nice." The next thing you know we have a new competitor in the Big Points Race and even more support at the regional level. Like the guy that built Norm's Challenger. He almost entered the series, but I think wound up building a Viper instead(?) The guys at the hometown track will bug their buddies to build a slant six car because it's easy and less expensive and they need another slant six car to race against and there's this really cool newsletter,.. and....

It was really exciting for me to hand $100 to that guy Matt down at Reynolds last year with his whole family watching and cheering him on. He just had a bone stock Duster running 20 second quarter miles and he was just tagging along because someone else in his family was a racer. That day he was the 'Big Dog" though and his whole family was up in the stands hooping and hollering when he won. They all asked if we would be back next year and were planning on bringing the Duster and talking about other slant six cars they knew of that could be made into race cars. That's the kind of racing I love!

I'm a "Hometown Racer" kinda guy that loves this stuff and has had the wonderful opportunity to meet several of the people I've been reading about for years in the old Slant 6 News and now SSRN. That's the beauty of this series. You don't have to be a big money, devote your life to the racing kinda guy. You're accepted and recognized just because you share the same slanted attitude as everyone else. That's what won me over years ago and what really impressed me at the banquet last year. I had only been to one real Slant 6 Race and barely even made that one, but I felt like I was welcome and that my thoughts and opinions were welcome. That's what makes this series and all of you so special.

I think the Regional Series deserves more thought and effort, even if it doesn't mean more entries at the "Big Races". Every "Big Race Series" that I can think of has more than one smaller race series that recruits and grows people for the big one.

Sorry to ramble. It's late, I'm tired, and feeling a little homesick. Just needed a taste of the "Slanted Thing" and decided to post.

Enjoy the banquet and be safe.

Rob

What does everyone think about having a board of directors. Maybe 4-5 elected people that serve 2yrs and then rehold elections?
This group would be responsible for the organization and running to the series and maybe a take a little of the load off of Doug and Seymour. They would responsible for contacting and setting up the races and banquets as well as any rules and/or points disputes.

just a thought....

Of the racers, for the racers.

That idea might have some merit. We may want to consider trying to have representation from the different regions on the board. Like Regional Directors that are responsible for their region and each region has input for the group as a whole. I think there would still need to be someone like Doug and/or Seymour or whomever that sits as the Chairperson / President / Commander In Chief  that has the final say on things.

I don't know how much interest there is amongst the group as a whole in the Divisional / Regional series idea, I'm starting to think not a lot. But I firmly believe in it.

I won't ramble on again about it, but I have some ideas if anyone is interested.

I was in no way saying replace Seymour. In fact he would still be the "point" man in all cases but like you said have a group that help organize and coordinate the series as well as ideas or changes.
I had thought of the regional approach and that would be a very good plan.

That sounds like some pretty big shoes to fill.

I would like to be involved at a regional level, but I don't want to cause a stir, seeing as how I've only ever been in one race and don't really know much about the rules yet.

I don't want to sound too bold, but don't mistake that for lack of interest.

Hey Slant6Ram,

You're part of the future of the series! I don't know much either, but am interested and willing to help.

Hopefully the group at the banquet this year will decide that there is some merit in the regional concept.

Having more people responsible for "their piece of the pie" would hopefully take some of the load off of Doug and Seymour.

It might even give the opportunity to some of the racers that can't make it to the "Big Series Races" to start something within their region and thereby help to grow the series.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Rob

Maybe it's "No news is good news".

Does that mean that getting no news is a good thing or that news is never good? Hmmm...

I think the lack of info is because Seymour is taking what came out of the banquet meeting and putting it into the next newsletter. He's not a "surfer" like the rest of us geeks without a life. He's a "hard copy" kinda guy.

By the time my next newsletter gets through the mail to Germany and then my wife gets enough stuff together to send it to me in a care package the season will be well under way anyway.

There's something really cool about opening a box and seeing that SSRN in there though! When I see that I grab my Gerber and pry open the staples before I even eat a single home-made cookie! Now that's "Slanted Addiction"!

For those of you checking the status on this: Check the Poll in the Racing Q & A posted by Tom Drake regarding the Divisional points idea.

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): The "Divisional" or "Regional" idea has been canned. There is only going to be "The Series" as it exists now as far as races in the program go. There won't be any Divisional program this year.

For more info check the Poll by Tom.

Note: Seymour does not do the Internet thing and therefore does not follow these posts. He does get the feedback from Tom Drake and Doug Dutra and others though.

If you are truly interested and willing to get something started in your area so that you have a Slant 6 racing venue to participate in then you gotta get out and do it. There are several people here that have a lot of experience in setting up these events that can give you some pearls of wisdom. Tom Drake and Doug Dutra are two for example.

This Series didn't grow overnight. It took a lot of effort on the part of several very dedicated people to get this thing where it is. Doug Dutra was able to add an event "Way out West" and it is now a part of the Series. Good Luck.
