http://www.arrowtipi.com/My%20Webs/index%20Valiant.htm

I purchased my 65 Valiant 2dr HT in Nov99 from a couple of kids for $450cdn....the motor was baffed and the suspension was hooped from a long trip into the weeds,,the K-member was bent from pulling it out of the weeds.,,,,but the body was in good shape.I transplanted a slant I had sitting around(69 with an 80? head)tossed in a clutch disc and rebuilt the suspension using junk i had lying around. The factory buckets although in good shape were uncomfortable so I replaced them with front and rear seats from a Toyota Cressida.(We do a lot of winter commuting to snowboard races).A set of CragarSS with 195 14 Import truck snowtires and it was on the road. Feb 2000 on the way back from a Boardercross race in Alberta Canada we hit an Elk broadside at 65 MPH,,,luckily,we were uninjured and our insurance covered this and although we were without the car for a month it was repaired nicely.(gotta love "A"-body safety). My kids were learning to drive and were leary of the 9" brakes and 3-on-the-tree so spring 2000 I bought a donor car and added disc brakes,,10"rear drums..electronic ignition and upgrade alternator,,straightened the K-member and eurathaned/rebuilt the front end, added sway bar,,in July 2000 I added an 82 Mustang 5spd overdrive trans(2days later drove it across Canada with 5 people in it,,,30MPG cdn on the prairies at 75 MPH)
Fall 2000 we painted it 98 Mustang red with white 65 Barracuda stripes and added BFG T/A 235 60 14s on aluminum wheels($100 for all 4). I finished it with 2.25" exhaust and a super6 setup and an electric fan from a Ford Escort .(90% highway driven) since deleted. For winter driving we use a set of older(read ugly) aliminum wheels(14x6) with 195 75r 14 Nokian Hakkapollitta Q s on all 4 corners.I figure I have $2600cdn in the car($25 US).The best part is our 165-168cm snowboards fit in the trunk and it is a great snowboard teamcar.

I used a "RAP" trans from an 82 Mustang 2.3L. My car had a stock aluminum bellhousing which I used as well as the stock clutch arm and throwout bearing.A stock Volare wagon driveshaft adapted to the stock Mustang slipjoint with a combination u-joint(NAPA).I used a clutch disc ( 9 1\4") from a Ford ranger and the stock Valiant pressure plate.I had the input bearing retainer machined down to fit the Valiant throwoutbearing and the bellhousing register(big hole the trans fits into)I had to do a little grinding inside the bellhousing to allow the holes to be drilled for the trans bolts(Mustang bolts through bellhousing into trans)I used Mustang bolts and then "clamped" trans to bellhousing using the stock Valiant bolt holes, total 8 bolts!,,,pretty ridgid. The tricky part was extending the trans input shaft to mimic the Valiant one,,I had an extension machined and then shrunk it onto the Mustang input shaft(heat extension,,,cool input shaft) we used some high temp Loctite to make us feel better. It is a little tricky getting the trans/bellhousing combo into the car,,,but it all fits nicely,,,my car was a 3spd originally so the trans hump is pretty small.I had to modify the trans mount and add my own "cushion mount".
You get 2 more gears,,,,1 lower than stock and 1 (OD) higher, the low gear is really low,,,with a stock super6 i can idle up a good grade in 1st,,,and do one hella burnout even with 235/60 14 BFGs. With 3,23 gears shift points are 20mph 40mph 60 mph 75 mph.
I used a Hurst shifter handle and "T" knob just for fun,,shifter ends up in the perfect spot.
Be warned RAP is a light duty box, however it weighs 15 lbs LESS than the stock 3spd.

You obviously put a lot of hard work into what started out pretty thrashed. Nice result.

Sandy, you may want to grab the source of that page and toss it on a server of your own. Content archived at web.archive.org has a tendency to appear/disappear and move around so links die early and often.

Good, sounds like it's staying put. My own '65 Canadian Valiant was a Custom 200 4-door, L3C59186050. I keep meaning to send $45 to Chrysler Historical for a copy of the build record.

..we sorted out our slant pile today and stuff goes to the machine shop via next available. Looks like a 37000 mile 225BH block with a forged crank from a 76 1 1/2ton truck. The head is a 69 drool tube head with Chev 1.72 intake and 1.52 exhaust...bowls cut to match. I have a new set of .30 over pistons and rings. We will deck the block .80 to make up for the radiused combustion chambers. Final CR about 9:1. I have a used Comp 264s cam and double row timing set. My rocker set has 37000 miles on it and is from the 1 1/2 ton truck.
We will just use the Super 6 intake and exhaust for now. I figure solid 17s going through the traps in 4th gear. 3.23 gears

The Machine shop just called. The crank and cam just needed a polish....the head is done , milled 25 (They installed even bigger valves than I sent....I asked them to go back to 1.72/1.50 that I sent them) ....so I got hardened seats/ bronze guides , dual v/v springs. teflon seals. The block is bored and honed. New pistons on rods.
Tomorrow the block gets decked to give 9:1 CR (they are CCing the heads this aft. ....)

Too bad next week is too busy to put it together and in.

One more week of 50 miles a day of the worlds saddest motor. ...

After getting all the stuff back from the machine shop I put together the new motor and added a few things I have been collecting.

It took a little fiddling to get the valve train sorted out. It seems stable and stays in adjustment. Later this week I will add "half nuts" as jam nuts for the valvle adjusters. I had to massage the baffles in the valve cover to clear the rockers. I use an early (65) valve cover. The combination of more cam lift and my backed off adjusters meant they just touched the cover.

I added a brand new fuel pump I had laying around,,,fixed the slow drip at the carb inlet,,,put stainless gear clamps everwhere there was a fuel hose end.,,,and generally upgraded the decrepid fuel delivery system. There had been a high RPM leanout before the motor swap,,,its gone.

I added a Dakota mini starter... resurfaced the flywheel and pressure plate using a flapper disc on a 4" grinder, closed the gap on the shifter fork,,,replaced the clutch fork boot,,,,and retun spring....rebushed the clutch Zed bar,,,,fixed the shifter boot and reinstalled my Hurst T-bar shifter knob

I added extended reach NGK plugs to the mix...I like!

The car runs a little hotter than before.
It makes the same low end torque as before.
High end horsepower has increased immensely.
The car is smoother and sounds way tougher.
The "sweet spot" in the torqu band has been moved up far enough that 55mph in 4th seems ideal for mileage.
My guess is that 90mph in 5th gear will be the sweet spot for intergalactic travel.

If I mat it at 10mph in 1st gear I can light up both rear tires.

From a standing start I can let the clutch out at an idle and move smoothly away without a stutter.......great for parking.

The car needs more "carburation" to really make use of the modifications. I keep thinking about a 400 cfm throttle body....and 10 lbs fuel pressure. O2 sensors rule.

I ordered them last week from NAPA in Nakusp (22 miles up the lake) 4 came from Edmonton 4 came from Vancouver and another 4 came from Kamloops(I think).

The NAPA in town services all our vehicles (when I dont want to/dont have time to) and has since 1978. When I say I want something they work pretty hard to get it.

I can get you the other 6 if you want.....

We are somewhat closer to Japan,,,,

The gasket rings unthreaded easily and all 6 I installed were neatly gapped to .035. I notice the plug wire snapped on the NGKs with much more authority than the Autolites they replaced.

H'mm. 4+4+4=12. *GASP* You've found the rumoured-but-never-actually-seen twin-spark head for the slant-6?!!

No immediate need, thanks (and besides, I'd need 8.)

True, that, as was pointed out to me by someone last week talking about the large number of safety-uncompliant used cars from Japan that find their way to BC because the kidzzzzzz think anything "JDM" is kewl. We don't see any such a phenomenon in TO.

Well I was just a tad disappointed today when I puled into the sawmill where we get our wood and suddenly I heard a squeal and a rod knockin'. I think I know which one because it hacked off the dipstick.
I can still turn the motor over with a bar but it squeals on certain parts of the rotation....just like a rod.

Unfortunately I got an order for 30 tipis today that will keep me pretty busy this week...I hope to haul it out in my "spare time" and get it back to the machine shop in Vernon on thursday,,,,They aseembled the short block ,,,so we will see how that goes.....ho hum.
