I can't seem to find new plug wires that have the large boot that seals off the slant six's spark plug tubes. I've seen suggestions to remove the boots from my old wires and put them on new wires. Does that mean I have to pull the boots off the new wires and slip the old boots on? Is the clip that snaps onto the plug tip part of the new boot, or is it crimped onto the end of the wire? Do I need some special crimper? Someone who has done this, please reply.

Better yet, are there some new (yellow) wires with the correct boots??

Check Ebay for new wires with the tube covers, I see them on there alot, usually around $25.00 plus shipping. Or you can just use your old tube covers, lube the wire with some grease or oil and they should slip off with a little patience. Then slip them on the new wires with some lube.

Eureka!! I found some today at NAPA, but they are black. :(
They have a separate large tube cover that slides over a standard-looking straight boot. We still want to use yellow, so they don't help the situation. Where could I get bulk wire and supplies to make my own set?

Would the newer style wires be better than buying the original NOS ones like those found on E-Bay? And again, does it make much difference whether I use 7mm wires or go with something larger?

Unless your doing a restoration or want to look stock, you don't need the boots on the end. I believe the thicker wires have less resistance or something like that....possibly....maybe... :wink:

According to the ignition article in the latest "Car Craft" most of the thicker wires only have thicker insulation. This is suppose to reduce the potential for arcing with increased cylinder pressures. With most engines you are just as well off with stock wires. If you use some silicone spray you can remove your old "tube hats" and put them on the new wires, even the thick 8mm ones.

i just ordered some accel wires that are yellow from mancini racing. they are the same ones that are on ebay for 24 bucks but these were 15.

Cheap boots..............

I got spiral core wires for mine (no boots of course) then added


VW boots that sealed the shrouds for the old air-cooled flat 4 engines at a local shop that specializes in old VW's.


You can find them on the internet too.

If you buy new plug wires from NAPA, they come with the drool tube boots. They are sold under the "Belden" name.

Like 73dart_swinger, I bought the 8mm ACCEL set from Mancini. The yellow looks cool in the Viper Race Yellow engine bay with the Chrysler Blue engine as a backdrop. I salvaged some good boots off the old original wires and will consider swapping them over later.

NAPA Belden 720201, "Spark Plug Cover". These are the separate round covers that you found on those NAPA wires. You can buy them by themselves under the above P/N, and install them on the straight ordinary boots of whatever which spark plug wires you choose to buy.

What is the purpose of the boots in the first place?

I asked my local Napa for the NAPA Belden 720201, "Spark Plug Cover" and while they agreed that the number looks valid they could not find them in the system. Are these now a thing of the past or should I check with another auto parts store?

They did say they could sell me a wire set for 15.99 with the spark plug covers on them. About how much was part number 720201? Is 15.99 for 6 covers and a bunch of carbon string worth it to keep moisture out of the drool tubes?
