Quick question here: If we put a Mallory Unilite distributor in the fiance's Dart, are we unable to use a capacitive discharge controller (like a Hyfire or MSD box)? I've been able to find no clear answer from Mallory, but their Promaster series coils (getting one for my truck) specifiy that they can be used with a Unilite distributor and NOT their Hyfire boxes.

What'd be the best method to eliminate the points and still be able to use a capacitive discharge box? Looks like most of the points eliminators use hall effect, which the Hyfire boxes don't like :?

Why is it so important to use a CD box? CD is old tech; there are much better ignitions available (much less expensive, too).

Well, any multi spark controller really. Guess I should've been more specific. I was just wondering if the Unilite did that itself, or if you needed (or were even able to use) a box like the Hyfire series with it.

I don't believe that the unilite does multi-spark by itself. They simply claim:

These Mallory Unilite distributors give you accurate, maintenance-free ignition timing. Instead of old-fashioned points systems, they have photo-optic LED triggering systems that never vary or wear out. You get increased rpm potential, improved combustion, longer spark plug life, and better cold-weather starting. Hooking one up is a simple 3-wire connection, and they come with your choice of adjustable mechanical and/or vacuum advance, self-lubricating bushings, and a Super Duty cap and rotor.

Yep, there's no advantage to the Mallory distributor over a regular Mopar electronic distributor. Either one will trigger whatever electronic box you want. Note the vacuum advance version of the Mallory dizzy is no longer available, only the one without a vacuum advance. And they are EXPENSIVE!

Yes, I believe they make those clams over a factory points ignition. I'm sure some Mopar dists are fine, just not the type I have, the lean burn one.

The last unilite I bought cost 135, I checked price on one tonight and it was about 435!!!

Several brand-new (not rebuilt) Chrysler vacuum advance (non lean burn) electronic \6 distributors on eBay right now, for around $50...

So no real need for a Mallory electronic dist then it seems. Sweet. Makes planning the elec. ignition just a bit easier :D

What boxes do some of you guys use? I put a Hyfire VIA on the 6 cylinder in my truck and love it, but I'd like to hear some other folks' opinions...

GM HEI module mounted to a ¼" × 3" × 2½" piece of aluminum on the inner fender. Very easy, very inexpensive, and very effective.

Maybe I am not searching correctly because that's the first place I looked.

I did just find one I overlooked before, used starting at 12 dollars. Searching for \6 doesn't seem to work, I found some parts under slant six but more under slant 6. I can not find the new ones you mentioned.

Looks like someone snagged it. This seller apparently has a large stock; he's been running these auctions for well over a year. I bought one of them for my '62.

Well, ornery old doc went to a junkyard this morning and bout a used on for 30 bucks. Every slant 6 carb in the yard was gone.

Doc is out buying a TP-45 from NAPA right now and then he's gonna HEI convert his truck. He thought he could hook the dist right up to the coil without a module, I told him it wouldn't work and gave him about 20 pages of printed stuff on how to hook it up with HEI.

Thank you SlantSixDan.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

No kiddin? I wouldn't have thought an HEI system would work on a /6 (but at that, I don't know much about HEI systems). Any tricks to installing it or anything like that? Did you get a factory GM module from a certain vehicle, or some aftermarket one? I take it you're using a Mopar elec. distributor? Still have the ballast resistor?

Nope, shouldn't use the ballast resistor, not good for HEI and this truck never had one anyway.

Here's a paste, hey wait it says I have a 2bbl super six? NM that, read the paste around that:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I printed out a bunch of stuff for him on converting it to HEI and he decided to do so. I think HEI is probably better than the stock dodge (non-lean burn) ignition. He got a dist from a local yard and an Echlin TP45 and started wiring it yesterday.

SlantSixDan was very helpful and got me all the info I needed on wiring it.

I have heard of someone else getting 18 mpg which sounds pretty amazing but I guess possilble if you are getting 20. That's really good mileage.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. One more question though: Are HEI systems a multi-spark setup? I'd love to be able to get a multi-spark system onto that slant. Once I had gotten one into my truck, it felt so smooth I couldn't believe it. That's what I want to do for my girl's car
