Well while working on my transmission leak, I noticed a stripe of grease inside the transmission tunnel.

It turns out the boot for the Ball and Trunnion/Pot Joint on the drive shaft has cracked. I was hoping not to have to deal with this until I had the drive shaft shortened for my rear end upgrade.

It looks as though I need to either replace the boot or change the shaft over to the spicer type u joint.

I read that you can use a CV joint from a Dodge Caravan. I think Doc posted this. Is there a specific year that works best? Is there any sort of technique to doing this other than what is in the service manual? Does this last?

I found all of the fresh reproduction rubber driveline boots any of us could need.
In my research, and before I had to pay to have them made I discovered:
Roberts Motor Parts 800-231-3180
Boots cost 22.50 each.
There are two sizes, (Which caused me to get mad a Frank Mitchell for selling me a small one.)
They look exactly the same, only one is smaller in length for smaller engines and one is larger for full size Mopar products.
This is very good news for all, and for the person who asked about larger vehicles.
I'm told by Gary Roberts he can look up the size you need and stocks both.
I told Roberts he needs to advertise better because guys like me have wasted money on more expensive 40 year old boots of questionable quality.

I had the cross-and-roller conversion done on the driveshaft that's in my '62. Pretty much any good driveshaft shop can do it; it involves a spline that bolts to the trans output flange, a slipyoke and a cross-and-roller U-joint.

The use of a late-model FWD CV joint is an interesting idea! I've never heard of this, so I hope we get some details on that.

Note that if the B&T front U-joint in your driveshaft is still good, you can just replace the boot. Andy Bernbaum has the boot/clamp kit, Q102, $22.50. He also has the complete front U-joint rebuild kit (which includes the boot and clamp kit), Q112, $75. Website is http://www.oldmoparts.com .

I alwez hear Californians and others refering to "driveshaft shops" like there's one on every corner! Doe's anyone know of any driveshaft shops in the SE? I'm not implying they don't exist, I just need one myself.

We have a couple in my area. The one I use treats me very well. Made me a conversion driveshaft, for $125, parts and labor. Will do for OP for $175.

Yep, that is exactly the conversion I've got on my '62.

Come to my town, and I'll show you an area that's without one. Yep, Dan, picked up those yellow pages, thar ain't nairn. I hear there's one in Atlanta, I've checked the yellow pages when I've gone home to my mom's, nothing listed there that I saw, either. So I guess they're on every corner except in GA. Sure, there's a welding shop here that can shorten a shaft, but you have to hold their hands and make sure they line up the ears right, and they can't balance it (yes, Dan, I know how to do a homemade balance job). I guess I need to ask around next time I'm at the track.
