Hello All

I need to replace the 10 studs in the housing which hold the center section in. I was surprised to find this to be a problem. Any input on NEW studs would be appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

H'm. Should be a pretty standard hardware item -- just double-ended studs of the correct length and with the correct threads -- but probably not something you'll find at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. Where have you looked? Check http://www.smallparts.com ?

It's actually like a wheel stud which presses in from inside but it's small (3/8-24 by about 1 or 1.5 inches). I have tried local axle shops, Dutchman, hardware supply houses and a few websites with no luck.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know about the press-in nature (having never had to replace these myself).
Have you contacted any of the rear axle rebuilders or parts suppliers? Some of them advertise in the Mopar magazines (Randy's RIng & Pinion, etc.), but usually in a major metropolitan area there's at least one rear axle specialty house. I remember where one such place is in Denver, and there's one here in Toronto not far from the house. I'll see if I can remember to swing by there on my way to work tomorrow and find out if they can get the studs.

I have contacted several shops which do nothing but rebuild rear ends and do custom axles, housings & gear work with no luck. I just have not found the right shop yet, I quess/hope

I want to know where to find these type of studs too. Some of the master brake cylinder adaptors (to fit aluminum 2-holer in place of cast iron 4-holer) use this same type of stud in the appropriate size.

OK, that's right, they do -- so they're out there somewhere, we just gotta find 'em. I've got a few ideas on where to check, watch this space.

Look on Moparts for Zippy. He seels the M/C adapters.

There is also Dr. Diff. He may be able to help too.

Found a source for the studs. Was working on a 4 wheel drive Ford pick up. These same studs are used to fasten the spindle to the steering knuckel. Ford part # EOTZ3C140A, $1.94 ea list bag of 6. I think these are also used in the Mopar axel flanges to hold the backing plate and axel retainer.

Charlie,
Do you know specifications such as the thread size and length?

3/8-24, 1 5/16 long. Has a slightly larger dia shank, with serations. The head also has a flat on one side. It is identical to the ones in a spare 8 3/4 rear, I have. I cannot measure the length of the studs in the axel flanges(that part is still assembled), but they look the same

Thanks All

The studs are 1.5" overall and the knurled shoulder is .395" dia. I also herd from Mancini Racing (Art Cowan) and they have a stud kit for the center section and flange ends. I also found that these studs appear to be used in trailer axles. I would think that ARP would have some but they are not to quick with the e-mails.

Steve
