I'm going to be buying a set of tires for my '71 Satellite w/ '73 14x6 rally wheels - I looked around, and have found a list that would seem to be reasonable candidates. I'd like to hear about experience that people have with any of the following in that or very similar size:

Goodyear Eagle#1 NASCAR
Firestone Indy 500
Dunlop Qualifier GT
Cooper Cobra
Kelly Sprinfield Charger

I'm especially interested in wet traction, followed by dry; wear and snow don't really matter to me, as the car is only driven to shows and events.

All the manufacturers claim great wet traction, but I'd like to hear from some owners, if possible.

I'm willing to consider going to a 15x7 reproduction rally wheel, but I'm unsure of the fit and whether the improvement would be worth the cost and effort.

I have used the cooper cobras in the winter, and that was "ok"
Not really an answer, but anyway...

I had that size set of Stoney's on my 66-300 that they used to put on Ford ranger trucks and they were good handlers. I can't tell ya about the wet conditions as I didn't ever get a chance to drive in wet weather, never have, never will!
Im now running 235/60s BFG T/As on it now and like them alot more as far as handling goes.
I think the 225s would be fine on a 71 Satellite.

The benefit in better feel, handling and tire selection would make the switch to a 15x7 worth it. A 15 with a 225/65 tire would look better on the Satellite than the 14" 70 series donuts. Heck a 225/60-16 would be better still on a B body.

A 6" wide wheel is on the narrow side for a 225 tire too so you'll get a bigger sidewall bulge with a mushier handling. A 205 is optimum for a 6" wide rim if you decide to stay with the 14s.

I love my Indy 500s they look cool and feel great, very quiet also. The sidewall could be little stiffer.

Tirerack.com has nothing but glowing reviewsd on this tire which is why I opurchased them. The BF Goodriches get mostly negative wet weather reviews, except for people who like the look of the classis muscle car tire.

Are you sure your 14" Rallye wheels are 6" wide? Maybe they are custom made? All OEM 14" Rallyes were 5.5" wide.
Width is measured from the INSIDE of the beads.
There were 2 widths of the Road (5 spoke) wheels, 5.5" and 6".
Also, 2 widths for the 15" Rallyes, 6.5" and 7".
I would run a 205-70x14 on a 14" Rallye, and if don't care about tire wear, maybe a 215-70x14.

I've been calling it as i see it for my entire life and that's not about to change. Take it or leave it.

I run 15X7 police rims with 225-70/15's on my Satellite and have no clearence issues, though the fronts do rub the inner fender on full lock turns and full compression (very rare and only done on rough, slow pot holed dirt roads, like a wrecking yard I know off). The front tires are less then an inch from the outer tie rod ends. The shop manual says 60 series tires should only on cars with "XH.D. suspension w/sway bar & restricted susp. travel required, do not use on four door sedans".

I'd like to thank everyone again for their help and advice.

After carefully comparing comments, clearances, dimensions, and wet traction I finially decided to try Firestone Firehawk 500's in 225/70-14 on my (1973) 14x6" wheels (my 1971 wheels are 14x5.5", but the '73s measure a little wider). The difference in appearance and ground clearance over the previous 205/70-14s is quite noticable.

I seriously considered going up to 15x7" reproductin Rally wheels, but couldn't find a tire I liked very close to the factory's G60-15.

So far, (50miles), there is no interference and they fit and look good. For once, it didn't rain, so I can't tell how good they are as a rain tire yet.
