This is kinda random, but I have a question on insurance cost. Unfortunately in about November my Dart started making noises, and therefore we had to deem it 'undriveable'. Since then, I've purchased a little Nissan to get me around. Don't like it much though, and can't wait to get my Dart back on the road. Anyway, to make a long story short, I'm curious to ask those of you who have more than one car insured. How much is it to tack on a second car to an insurance policy? I know it varies from person to person, but I mean say I'm paying $100/month for my car now. If I add the Dart to that, will it be the same price added on or less? How much less?
Thanks for the input.

It should be something like 30% of the cost of one car by itself. It makes a big difference, especially if you don't have another "primary" driver.

I have 4 cars insured between my wife and I, and after one car per driver, it gets really cheap.

Another tip is to not carry collision/comprehensive on the Dart (or either). The amt you'd get back in a wreck on your car is probably not more than $1000 even if the car is nice, so may as well save your money and pay out if you crash and it's your fault.

Yup, only have liability on my duster because max insurance would pay is bluebook value, which is what, $2? ;)

Also ask about special discounts, like good driver (no tickets in x # of years) or if your going to school, student discount if your gpa is above a certain level.

Auto insurance is one of the biggest scams in the nation. It's government mandated, and loosely government regulated, unfortunately if you look at the background of most local and state politicians, you will find a very disproportionate number who are former or current insurance men. They keep the racket very lucrative for their cronies in the business. Good luck to you.

prior to getting my dart, I had my Honda and paid about $260 per 6 months on liab alone..this is with State Farm. After getting the Dart, I added it to my insurance, expecting not much to shell out.I was wrong, I paid another $260 or so for the Dart, and got a little multicar discount, not much, and I have a clean record, never a ticket since 1966..no accidents, I am very hesitant to put my Duster on my policy now....Jerry

Depending on the year/model, you might consider "collector car" insurance. It is inexpensive, but does have drawbacks. Most companies, require the car be kept in a locked garage. You must have another insured, regestered vehicle for every licensed driver in the household. The car cannot be used as a daily driver (milage restriction). I have collector insurance on my 66 Cuda, and 69 Polara. $100,000/$300,000 liability, $6,000 colision/comp on each car with no deductable. Cost is under $150 per/yr total. Of course, with the Cuda, if something happens at the track, I'm on my own, they would not cover. But if it was a race only car, I would not have insurance on it, anyway.

I have all of my collector cars insured with Hagerty Ins. I have primary vehicles for all registered drivers in the house.
There are no mileage limits, just no driving it every day, and I pay less than $500.00 a year for 4 vehicles and two trailers. They do have to be in a locked garage when on my property.

Wow, I thought Massachusetts had the highest insurance costs. Getting antique plates for the Dart would probably be the easiest thing to do.

I have 3 cars and pay about 600 a year with Progrssive for liability ins.
only. (min Va state required coverage). I was using Nationwide and after
doing a internet comparison I saved about 200 bucks a year by switching.

BUT car insurance is a big scam. All my insurance covers is the damage
I do to others if I am at fault! There is no coverage to fix my car. If you
don't have insurance in my state (virginia) you have to pay 500 bucks
a year per car!

So I am a very carefull driver!

Alfa (where available). Grundy (antique and specialty).

Progressive seems to me to be a bunch of hype and BS. I pay about $150 a year (liability only) with Alfa for my '88 truck, for example. Progressive told me with a straight face the lowest available (and they clamed they searched all) was about $1000 a year! I know others with similar stories.

In the end, it's all still a racket. You just have to decide which crook you're gonna pay.

I like when Geico commercials air in Massachusetts, since it isn't even available to us. It's all the Latinos/ illegal immigrants fault in Lawrence and Lowell staging collisions. We have to pay through the nose cause they refuse to get jobs.
