cil 4 and 5 no wonder cil number 4 has oil in it :cry:

The Doctor did an article on Slant Six Blocks, and according to him, extra oil around the lifters is a good thing:

"Another area to spend some time on is the lifter area and lifter bores. First drill some extra 1/2" oil drain back holes between the lifters and tap these out with a 3/8 – 16 NPT (or 5/8-16 unc) to accept "standoff" pipes.

"I drill a smaller drain back hole, positioned right over the fuel pump arm in a way that ensures a constant stream of "drain-back" oil to the cam lobe / F.P. arm contact surface. (Skip this if you only run an electronic fuel pump.) The lifter bores themselves get a small chamfer on their "downhill" outer edge and a short "lead-in" groove can also be added. The last step is to hone out each lifter bore with a wheel cylinder hone. (Have at it with the hone; SL6 lifter bores benefit from some additional clearance.) This prep work combined with some "stand pipes" will create a "pool" of oil on top of the lifters, which will flow around the lifter body and directly onto the cam lobe / lifter face surface."

Oil around the lifters is probably due to the tilt of the engine. It wont have anything to do with a cylinder burning oil.

ummm did you take a look at the first pic where the oil was as high as it could go???(circled in red?) I don't think that's normal...

and yes I saw that article where he has 2 oil holes in 4 and 5 and mine has none ...nada

there is not even a hole like the others where oil could go back down....

when I took a lifter out then was it when the oil (allot!) drained back down

I find it weird that cil 1,2,3 ,6 has oil holes near the lifters as 4 and 5 don't

block has been resleeved and new rings ..less a year driving it

I had to look twice at the picture yesterday to see it. I understand how someone could miss your problem. (the pictures are a little dark, but it's a difficult picture to take with everything being black)

Anyhow, I don't really have any experience with the problem you are having. This looks like something for Doc or someone who has seen/rebuilt a lot of slant sixes.

Even if you're missing drainback holes there, how is that going to put oil in the cylinder? That area is not pressurized, and the head gasket should keep the oil out of the cylinder. Even if it backs all the way up into the cylinder head, that's down on the pushrod side and it shouldn't cause oil to pool around the valve stems.

It may not be optimum to have that much oil pooling on the lifters, and cam oiling might be better with the standpipe modificaiton mentioned in the other post, but I don't think its causing oil in #4. That's some other problem.

For one, if he had the old style "spark plug tube" head, then when he changed spark plugs, it could make an awful mess. (maybe?)

I otherwise agree with your lack of pressure and point of entry considerations. I can't think of what problems it would cause, after the oil burned out from a plug change, no more should get in.

Cam and lifters would get plenty of oil, and increase oil capacity. :shock:

I just put my engine backtogether tonight, yes there should be a drain back hole between the lifters of each cylinder. I wish I had seen this post 2 hours ago I could have posted a pic Sorry.
