....or is my oil pump going out? I, like another member here (can't remember his name now) had a problem with some knock on start up due to oil pressure being slow to rise up. I decided to remove the filter and check the valve in the bottom of the stand pipe (I still can't get it off. I stuck a screw driver down to see if it would give any and seemed to move very little.) Well, when I removed the filter not even 20 minutes after parking, NOoil came out like it usually does (you guys know what I'm talking about)! I turned the filter over and I could still see clearly the by-pass valve at the top of the filter....only a light covering of oil was on it. I cranked the engine over with a remote starter (didn't start it) and oil came out with good force. I have good oil pressure (at least at the sending unit where I hooked up the guage line and sending unit). This was with a Napa silver filter. Could the anti-drain back valve in the filter have been faulty? I installed a Purolator 30001 and seems like oil is flowing through it, at lest the filter warmed up pretty quick after I started the engine. The light goes off immediately after start up, but the guage seems slow raising up (it is a cheap-o equis guage). Just what I need right now... :( Thank you for any help.

Probably just a slow gauge. If the light goes out right away, you have at least enough oil pressure for idle (5-10psi).

If you have good oil pressure, the pump is probably OK. IIRC, NAPA Silver filters aren't much better than Fram. Get a NAPA Gold, they're the ones made by Wix. Silvers are pretty generic and NOT made by Wix. Or get a Purolator or Wix elsewhere and try that.

Thanks for the replies. They put my mind at ease. 440, I did install a Purolator. In the 20+ years I've done my own oil changes and helping my dad do his (when I was a kid), I never saw a filter do that. Even the Fram's (Remember when they used to be good?).

I think the Silvers are made by Wix these days, but they're definitely a 2nd-line quality rather than the 1st-line Golds.

Yep, Napa Silver is made by Wix. Last time I buy a silver. Napa Gold or Purolator from now on.
