Okay, I feel a little juvenile asking a question like this, so don't beat me up too badly. With as little speculation as possible, what would it take to build a 200 H.P./200 ft. lbs. (at the crank) 225 Slant Six? Before you go all crazy, here are my restrictions: 9:1 - 9.5:1 compression, no nitrous or power-adders, Dutra Duals instead of headers. Could this be done? With a Super Six, or would a 4bbl be necessary? I realize we're talking about $1000 worth of head work, but I'm just wondering if it's even feasible...

I know, I know. I should focus on my goals, not the numbers. Let the beating begin! :)

I'd say that with a 4-bbl, some headwork and the right cam, it can be easily done.

200 HP - 200 ftlbs is easy... you just have to get air flow.
The right cam, good headwork combined with intake / exhaust improvements will do it.
A little more compression is just icing on the cake.

OK so good head work means port AND polish AND larger valves?
I have ported the head myself (the first porting I've ever done). I am thinking if I get the head done professionally, with the large valves, I'll see a big difference. Any thoughts ?

My set up:
MP 268 cam
Stock bottom end
Edelbrock 500 with Offy intake
Pertronix electronic ignition with 45 k coil
Clifford headers with 2" dual exhaust
new stock size valve job, .060 cut off, rookie porting
I know I need to recurve the distributor.
I don't think I am at 200 HP. More like 175.

You can likely gain 25 HP just with tuning (dist curve/mech advance). Get a good advance timing light (Craftsman has a good one for like $65). Did you degree cam? What are you running for times now?

I calculated my HP from my strip times at one point and I came up with something like 170 HP on my mild Duster build (mild cam, small 4V, headers, headwork, stock dia. valves, 9.1:1 compresion). I would think this would translate to something close to 200 flywheel HP, but of course we're talking ball-park figures.

It's all stock for now (except for electronic ignition). I've got a Super Six/Dutra Duals combo I'm hoping to install in the next few months. Just trying to decide whether to pull the motor and replace the cam and do an overhaul at the same time. The biggest limiting factor seems to be the stock cam. Everything else is (relatively) easy to get to.

So a Super Six 2bbl won't make 200 H.P.? Bummer. Guess it shouldn't suprise me. Thanks for the responses, gang!

A Supersix 2bbl can make 200 hp, but you would need primo components for the rest of the motor build. A big 2bbl or small 4bbl will do you better and will be easier to tune the power out of.

I have a timing light but I need to do something with the distributor.

I have degreed the cam and it's 1* retarded. I'll call Comp for an offset washer for my cam gear.

I have not made it to the track yet with this cam. I used my G-Tech and came out 16.22 @ 89 mph.

I still don't know what to set the valve lash at. I am going to do the "a little tighter than ticking" method soon.

I wouldn't touch your cam timing if it's only 1 deg retarded. Only changes of 2 deg or more will be noticeable. Do you have a jet/rod kit for the Edel carb?

Retarding a cam does tend to boost the high end, anyway, so the 1degree may be giving you slightly more HP................... (maybe 1 or 2  )
