I want to replace the ball joints in the upper control arms. I have a '64 Dart, but this is from a '73 (I'm converting to disc). I believe this is threaded. My 67 shop manual shows a tool and has a torque setttng.

Does anyone know where I can get this tool or a socket? Napa and Autozone do not have it. I guess I could use a pipe wrench, but I won't be able to torque it back on.

Thanks

I would try espo Springs and things - their catalog shows a 1/2 inch
drive ball joint socket for 30 bucks. I also believe Snap On still
sells the Ball Joint Sockets, those are 3/4 inch drive and won't
let you down if you like to brag about how expensive your tools
are. I found a used one on ebay. For a 60-72 the square socket
is 1 and 13/16 inches. For a 73 (and up) it is the 1 7/8 inch size.

You might try a tool rental place if you just need it for this one job.

I went to a local tire/alignment shop and had them order me the ball joint socket out of a tool/supply catalog they had. It was less than $25 for the socket. It needs a 3/4" drive wrench. That was the cheapest place I could find it. Napa and Snap-on get huge profits from reselling these tools.

I have a socket, I'm in Alameda (near Oakland) so if you're in the neighborhood feel free to drop by.

I think it's the 1 13/16 socket because I had to grind the ball joints a little bit to get the socket on.

Whatever you do, I would recommend soaking the joint with PB Blaster or some other penetrant; the ball joint wants to take the threads with it when it comes out.

My email is slafolle (at) gmail.com.

Cheers

Steve

Thanks for the replies.
I found it and a ball joint "lifter" online from www.pennautotools.com.
They have low prices and fast shipping.
