Gentlemen: I am looking at some two barrel options for my recently acquired Mongrel, a pieced-together D100, slant sixed, NP435, short bed. I think I've narrowed the search down to the Motorcraft 2100, the Weber 32/36 "D" series, or the Holley 5200. My Prime considerations are, of course, Mileage and Driveability. The Wrench that gets thrown into this question is that I live at 6,000 feet, and often drive up to 11,000 feet, so I am needing to get this carb running clean, lean and widely adjustable if I am going to get it up in those mountains! I don't mind some welding, drilling, grinding and epoxy, but I don't want to go down a dead end road if some of you guys have already tried something that isn't worth the time! So help me brainstorm!!

Things to take into account in my carb choices: The trans is a NP435 so kickdown linkage is not an issue, and the "choke pull-off" (whatever that thing is called) won't be needed either, since I am planning an electric choke (or the maybe the coolant type).

I know the exhaust side and carb need to be planned together, here's my intentions on the exhaust: remove a little material inside the stock exh. manifold and go with a home-grown 2 1/4" pipe with a Turbo-style muffler. Pretty basic and close to stock. I still have the evap canister and was planning to leave it in place, but have heard of issues with the charcoal in the float bowls. Any thoughts? And Lastly, this slant seems to have Hydraulic lifters!?! I wasn't aware they did that, and what are the problems I can expect with this setup?

BTW, great site you've got here! I always liked slants, but NEVER thought they'd develop a following!

My last slant was about 25 years ago, and I haven't even have a Carburetor of any kind for almost 20 years, so ALL of your help is APPRECIATED!

All carburetors with automatic chokes of any kind (remote, integral, pure thermostatic, water-heated, hot air heated, electric) have choke pull-offs.

For a 2bbl slant-6, it's really tough to beat the Carter BBDs. Their metering system is such that they are considerably less upset by high-altitude operation than many other designs, and it just so happens that the later ('71-up) units are jetted on the lean side, i.e., just perfect for use up at 6 kilofeet.

Motorcrap carburetors are on the lengthy list of reasons why I avoid Fords.

go to pepboys and ask for a 14-143 champ rebuilt bbd i got it for 65 bucks with 5 buck core it is designed for a super6 22mpg at fway speeds cuda never ran so well.

I have an 82 D150 short bed auto. I've had the Holley 1945 and 1920 and a Carter YF one barrel. I just recently put on a 5210 Holley/Weber 2bbl progressive carb on my one bbl intake. And it's awsome!! You get the gas saving 1bbl and the kick of a 2bbl!
I don't know if you have a 1bbl intake or a 2bbl intake. If you have the 1bbl I would go with the Holley/Weber carb. If you have a 2bbl intake I would still go with the Holley/Weber for gas mileage. Or I would go with the Motocraft 2100 350cfm if I didn't care about gas mileage. The exhaust sounds just like what I would be doing. I just don't know about the altitude stuff.

I just called the local PepBoys in Allentown and they quoted $104.46
plus a core of 5. Where did you get yours from?

Remanufactured carbs are not the best way to go. Find an unmolested junkyard core instead.

I thoroughly agree. The carb on my the /6 in my 82 Dodge Ram was junk when I got it, and even after I rebuilt it, there were serious leaks around the throttle shaft. I figured I'd just go get a rebuilt one, because after all, those are professionaly remanufactured.

I went to Advance Auto and bought an exact duplicate of the one barrel Holly that was on my truck, except it was (supposedly) rebuilt. Well, it worked great for about six months until the accelerator pump linkage broke off, and wedged against my manifold with the throttle wide open. The replacement I got was obviously messed up, so they ordered me a third one. (all of this under warranty.) Finally I get the third one, and it looks ok, so I bring it home.

I got it all tightened down to the manifold and noticed there was quite a bit of wiggle still. Fearing I had somehow stripped my manifold threads I examined it, and realized that it was the throttle body to carb joint that was moving. And the bowl cover. After tightening all the screws, I put it on and went with it. Finally, after the warranty was over, I took it apart to see just what the insides were like. Sitting in the bottom of the bowl were all of the pieces of the power valve (I believe), which was appearently stripped out while being "rebuilt" and just left inside. Yes, it still runs (well, crawls), but I can't wait to get the 2300 and super six manifold on there that's sitting in my garage. (Should be finished w/in the next couple weeks.)

All that said, I don't blame Advance. There are only a handful of companies that build and/or rebuild parts. Most places you go would just sell you the same thing in a different box.
