i took the head off my engine the other day to drill out a snapped bolt (no i didnt snap it) that was the cause of my annoying exhaust leak. i manage to break the plastic 'plug thing' that screws into the head infront of the temp sensor. it has two vaccum lines going to the vacuum amp as in the picture below. do i need that or is there another way i can setup my vacuum lines? whats it called???

thanx,
Sonny

It's a tempurature controlled vacuum switch. Parts store should list it as a ported vacuum switch and they are available new for $20-$25. It looks like it's controlling your egr valve, but I can't say for sure. If you can live without an EGR, then just plug the lines for now. Neither of my slant sixes have working vacuum switches or egr valves.

Need is a very strong word, but I'm sure not bragging about my gas mileage. Cold engine performance is also lacking in my truck, but my car starts fine with almost the same setup, so the reasons are still unclear to me.

Speaking of NEED, neither of my motors have that hockey puck looking vacuum amplifier thing either. I can't even figure out what it does.

Oof. Can we please try to keep photos down to a manageable width?

The "hockey puck looking thing" and the ported vacuum switch are both part of the EGR system. See thread.
