I just discoverd my alternator is dying. When the car is running the alternator makes a whiny sound and develops heat quickly. Within minutes of startup the alternator is too hot to hold. My questions are:
How long do I have?
Where exactly is the problem, bearings, brushes, etc.?
And can someone point me to the link(s) surrounding the Nippondenso and any other units that are workable.

A shorted diode will make it whine and get VERY hot in a minute or two.
It's repairable. You did not say which alternator you have now.

I'm not entirely sure what alternator I have but here's what I know. It is a reman factory replacement for the one that came on a '65 dart slant six without AC. Nothing fancy.

What do I need to know in order to repair it.

Never buy "reman" parts!
The diodes in that alternator are pressed into the case. Check your local yellow pages to find a competent local auto electrical rebuilder who will build you a carefully-assembled alternator using quality components, so you don't wind up with a thrown-together hunk of low-quality junk like the "reman" unit that has failed you.

BTW, the front is a standard bearing size which you can get anywhere, so it's possible to get really cheap if you look around.........

J.C.Whitney sells bearing kits; it includes both front and rear and fits most US alternators and some idler pulleys. They used to sell diode + stator kits; I don't know if they still do.

That little needle bearing is readily available. It is used in many brand alternators and elsewhere in the world. A local rebuilder used to charge me $1 for that little bearing and not much more for the ball bearing on the other end. I used to buy both bearings and new brushes from him for $5 or so. I haven't been there lately to know if prices changed much. They buy those parts in bulk and they are cheap.

Replacing the ball bearing is a bit more challenging in the Chrysler alternators. You need a special puller to remove the pulley and a press to press it back on. Do NOT hammer the pulley back on , you WILL damage the shaft so do not even think about using a hammer.

Must be a geographical location thing.............

Everyone had the ball bearing, and the rear needle bearing was at about the 7th place I checked...... (with the 4th place's computer saying they had it, but it was no where to be found.....)

Thank you, I'll work on collecting the pieces. Is there anything special I need to know if I try to do it myself.

I hope I'm not making a mistake digging up and old thread rather starting a new one…

I lent my van to a friend last week. Came back with a noise that We first thought was caused by a loose belt.
Changed the belts, but the alternator is sill complaining. Sounds more like the bearings are giving up.

I guess I can bring it to a local repair shop for a rebuilt, but I also remember reading a post from Dan about a guy having a ton of NOS Chrysler parts for sale (unfortunately I can't find it again).
What option would you guys recommend?
