Hi everyone. Im getting ready to rebuild my slant soon and heres what ive got planned. Stock cr and highway gears, although if its not too expensive i may chop a few thousands off the head. Im also gonna get a better cam than stock, supersix conversion, electronic ignition, maybe some headers, a 2 1/2 inch exhaust with a flowmaster muffler, and maybe roller lifters (which u can get from summitracing btw for anyone who wants roller lifters). What im after with this motor is good performance and a nice V8 like rumble. I was thinking of using the High Energy 264s cam from comp. They say its made for 8:1 to 9:1 engines and that due to the "unique lobe design" it build good cylinder pressure without having to increase the cr. So what do u guys think?

If money is an issue, roller lifters/rockers are a waist of it. There are other ways with more bang for the buck. You might be able to get roller lifters from Summit, but what will they say, when you ask for a roller cam? The Comp Cams 264s, is a flat tappet cam, it is not compatable with roller lifters. Cam and lifters must be "matched", roller, flat tappet, or hydraulic.

Any year slant can use mechanical or rollers, or hydraulics. Just have to use the matching parts.

yes, I know they can be interchanged, but the guy was looking for inexpensive I believe, so I figured he would want to stay with whatever he already has.

cam choice is also going to depend on what you do to the head, if anything.

Can't do roller cam and lifters, inexpensive.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I didnt think about roller lifters needing a roller cam to operate although it would seem it would work. At any rate the basic idea im after is great sound and good peformance. The head will be ported and polished but the valves will stay stock for now. The rest of my plans can be read in my first post. But do u guys think that the 264s cam is the best choice for what im after?

as I personally haven't had any experience with that particular cam, I can't really give you a good answer.

is there a tech line you could call from the place you are thinking of buying it from? they might have a set range for what is going to work (as in head mods) for you cam choice.

maybe one of the racing guys on this board can give you a better answer.

Its a compcam for anyone who isnt familiar with it. Ive never used it myself but ive been reading some others peoples posts about it.
But thanks for showing interest Sick6 I appreciate it and to Charlie too. I know alot of people have read my post but only 2 people have commented on it. :) I dont know if everyone else just thinks im an idiot or if ive actually stumped some people I dont know. At any rate I do appreciate the help I do get. Hopefully if anyone can answer my question they will take pity on me if im dumb and help me :)

but asking a question isn't a sign of being dumb, you just didn't know. thats not a problem, thats what these boards are for in the first place.

my knowledge is limited to what I have personally played with, so with that said it might be a good idea to decide how much cash you want to devote to this project first.

be patient, someone will have the info for ya. you might want to personal message one of the racing guys, they might be able to tell you as they rebuild more often than the rest of us.

the comp cams 252 is the first step "better" than stock cam. i believe. it has a lower rpm operating range than the 264.

i chose to put the 264 in my motor. what little i have gotten to drive it, it performed great. i used my car as a daily driver and the only problems i was having after my rebuild, which is very similar to yours, was some trouble with my carb.

another thing to look at is your transmission. i have an automatic and put a higher stall converter in it when i installed the 264. people have run the 264 with a stock converter but you won't be getting your full performance potential out of it with a stock stall.

The best gain in hp on a slant engine is with the head. Not concidersig nos supercharger turbocharger. If you are going to port and polish the head it will not do much good unless you put larger valves in. Why port it with stock valves. Im no a enginer but if you are spending money on porting and polishing you need to put larger valves in. Thanks Ron Parker :D :D

264 should be a very good street cam, but best with a 2400-2600 stall converter as someone above mentioned. A converter like that will feel like stock until you stand on it, then you will feel very happy about the money you spent on it. Get one from a good shop like Midwest converters (Rockford, IL) or Edge Racing (Simi Valley, CA) or Continental Converters (Inglewood, CA).

You can make a stock-valve head flow, but it is better to put in bigger valves as Ron said.

Thanks for the responses guys. Ron: Im actually going to port the head myself instead of having someone do it for me. It will be my first attempt at it but Ill have guidance from a friend of mine whos ported heads before and from reading alot of post from here and other places I think I have the general idea what to grind on and what not to. But doing it myself only cost me the price of the kit which was around 40 bucks. I seriously doubt I could get bigger valves put it for 40 bucks which is why im leaving them stock for now but once I get a lil more money ill look into it. To 73 Dart and Dart 270: Ive actually just yesterday looked into stalls. Theres not many choices for pre-68 trannys with the small pilot and input shaft. But I did email Edge about theirs and they do carry those for 300 bucks. Thats a lil steep since I thought maybe I could get it for the price they show which is around 260. The MAIN question I had in the first place albeit I really appreciate all the advice so far, I wanted to know what cam will make a slant sound more like a V8 but give good performance.
