Hi all,

I am looking for a 20:1 steering box. Wildcat sent me a 24:1 instead of a 20:1, and I have not seen one on Ebay. I know that you can buy the parts, and rebuild a box. Any good sources for a complete one or the parts? FirmFeel seems too expensive for their complete ones.

Thanks, but this is why it is hard. Flaming river has 16:1 boxes, and I am on the outs with Firmfeel right now. I got one of their refurbed K-frames, talked to Dick personally at Firmfeel about my core K-frame, and he assured me it would be okay. I sent it up there, and he didn't like it, and I am still out my core charge. So, I am looking for a better source, even of the raw gears, and install them myself.

Other options? I am feeling jerked around by some of the normal vendors, such as Wildcat. I will mail them back the gear that I got, and will be out the cost of shipping, but no closer to getting a 20:1 box

Finding such a box in a wrecking yard, even a Mopars-only yard, is effectively an impossibility. They weren't factory installed. You might find a used one in somebody's Mopar classifieds, but pretty much the only way to get one of these is to patronise a vendor who has 'em new. I haven't shopped for one in about 6 years, but when I did, I bought the 20:1 worm-and-ball-nut assembly and it replaced the factory 24:1 assembly in my '62 steering box.

It's worth the hassle and expense; 20:1 is perfect!

Every different person you ask about the FR box says a different ratio, even in their own company. This is annoying. They had a steering column hooked up to one at the Nats last weekend and I counted 4.2 turns lock-to-lock. This tells me it's closer to 19:1 than 16:1.

I did what Dan did and it worked great. Manciniracing.com has the 20:1 gears for $200, and I've seen them cheaper. I'd start with a later model or V8 car steering box (needle bearings) and buy the 20:1 for the upgrade.

The 20:1 gear set is still available from MP. The price until about a year ago was 120 it's gone up to around 200 with dealer markup. I just checked with our parts department about a week ago for the price and availability.

Good info. I recall it being delisted shortly after the Green Brick article in Mopar Action. Perhaps the resultant rush of interest, together with the rise of such businesses as Firm Feel and Steer & Gear, brought it back from the brink of death.

Part number P4007612 20:1 worm gear package. List price $253 dealer net price $190. Basically that means if you are friendly with your local dealer you might get it for less than what you would pay through summit. Plus as an added bonus no shipping charges. I asked the parts guy and he had never heard of any kind of racer net price. He did say that they do wholesale stuff from time to time and that the price would be somewhere between 200 and 250 it all depended on the order. It makes me wish I had bought the package when it was cheaper. I still have ultra slow manual on my valiants.

I picked up the 20:1 gearset from the local dealer and then had Firm Feel put it into my box for me.

I used to own a factory original 16:1 box but I sold it years ago. I believe they were an option on A body cars for a few years in the late 60's. That sucker was too fast for my heavy B body with the 17x8 rims. I could barely steer it at any speeds below 20 mph.

I have been reading Tom Condran's book, and on Page 102, he says that the 20:1 option in the car was availible from the factory from 1970 to 1989. It sounds like nobody here has found that combo in junkyards, though. I will put in my stock box for now, and when I can, I will get the MP wormgear, and do it then.

Darn it, I thought this was going to be easy.
