I changed my oil on the slant the other day, after I was having problems with the oil light coming on.

Changing the filter, and refilling with 20w50 seems to have fixed the oil light problem.

But I noticed that the old oil smells a lot like gasoline.
Is this an indicator of other problems ? Maybe worn rings, or carb to rich ?

I would check fuel pump. Mine was doing that.

Yep, a torn fuel pump diaphragm is the prime suspect when the oil begins to smell of gasoline.

Actually that would not surprise me..
This car is from california, and has spent many years sitting in a garage and only being driven once in a while.
I have noticed that everything rubber on the car is disinigrating.
Window seals are hard, dry, and falling apart, everything rubber in the front suspension was falling apart (i've already done that rebuild), and I have several oil leaks from the engine and tranny that are probably due to old dried out seals.

Is there really any way to check the pump for this ? or am I just going to have to replace it and then keep checking the oil for gas smell. ?

You can pull the pump, connect the inlet to a hose leading into a can of gasoline, cap off the outlet and operate the pump lever against the floor (or with a big vise) and watch for the squirt of gasoline past the operating lever, but for all that effort and the low cost of fuel pumps...just replace the pump! Remember, California has for the past decade or so required gasoline formulations that tend to attack older cars' original fuel system elastomers.
