I can fit 360 heads on a 318 cant i? My buddys dad said they are the same block with a longer stroke. I heard 360's arent fun to have so i decided the 318. Im not sure about the difference in power though. The guy im buying thew motor from has a 360 with only 40k mi on it. Which would be better? Built 318 or stock 360?

There's no replacement for displacement.

Regarding V8 questions, you might get more responses at moparts.com or another Mopar forum, rather than slantsix.org...

Good luck!

A built 318 will kick the stock 360´s ass anytime, but why does the 360 have to be stock?

360 heads will bolt right on a 318 (I assume we're talking non-magnum all the way around). Matter of fact, Chrysler did that very thing on 4 barrel 318's in the eighties. Best all around head for a mild 318 (again, leaving out magnum era heads) is the mid-80's swirl-port head. This is a better all around head for the 318 than the 340/360 head. The 318 and 360 blocks, although similar, are different by the way. The 318 bore is 3.91" versus 4" for the 360. The front cover, driver's side engine mount bracket and pan are different, and the 360 is an externally balanced engine.

If you want a set of the heads Dennis suggested, just go out to your local junkyard and pull a set off of a 1985-up Fifth Avenue or Diplomat.

 I've built a half dozen 360's for bracket racing and have found them to be stout ,reliable motors. As long as you aren't planning to buzz the snot out of it (6500+) the stock internals will hold up just fine with careful attention to detail, good machine work, and a clean work area !! Remember THE "Golden Rule" when bulding any Mopar engine: IT IS NOT A CHEVROLET !!! Good Luck RICK

I would use the 360 heads on the 360 bottom end, and then do the mods that you were going to do to the 318. Just dont forget the 360 is external balance and the 318 is internal.

The best thing you can do for a 318 or 360 with factory parts is to use the late model Magnum head. This head is the same for 318(5.2l) or 360(5.9l). The magnum head out flows any small block head mopar provided from the factory and the port design keeps the velocity up so they work well on 318's or 360's.

The 340/360 open chamber heads add a lot of chamber volume that reduces your compression on a 318 so it requires a lot of extra machine work to get it back. The late 80's swirl port head has small ports and you will get a much bigger bump in power if you use magnum heads on a 318.

To use the magnum heads on a non magnum engine requires that you use lifters that oil through the push rods and hollow push rods. The easy way to ensure you get the right lifters is to order ones for an AMC 304/343/360/390/401 engine and mopar performance makes push rods of the correct lenght for this swap. You will also need a intake manifold that is drilled for the vertical bolt mounting orientation the magnum head uses. Otherwise the magnum head on a LA engine is a bolt on.

I used the magnum heads on the 360 I built for my Barracuda. The engine pulls cleanly from 1000 rpm to myself enforced 6000 rpm redline. With the Comp XE268H cam I am using the meat of the power is in the 1800 to 5800 rpm range. You just can't imagine how much more fun the Barracuda is to drive with a 300+ hp 360 compared to the hot-rod \6 I replaced.

Do you still have the hot-rod slant six? Why did you put in a V-8?

my 318 seems to run ok with 360 heads. the thing about needingto shave them is true. but they will need to be machined if you are building this thing right. depending on the casting numbers, the heads may be crappy smogger heads anyway. the late model heads are superior. i read about a supposed 30 hp gain due to the raised roof of the ports. if given the choice between the two, i'd go for the 360. why give up 42 cubic inches when you don't have to? pick up some late model 360 swirl port heads, maybe one of those $300 stroker cranks, a stout transmission, 8 3/4 suregrip...
man, i can do this all day! somebody make it stop!
how fast do you want to go anyway?

Well this is the deal folks...my dad ran the six for about ten years trying to blow it up...red line the piss out of it, only put in the required amount of oil to show on the dip stick, etc. So one day im driving home from work, not abusing the slant at all when suddenly i heard this knocking. Next day im on my lunch break, goin to pick up the girlfriend and the knocking was getting so bad i could feel it in the clutch pedal. So i dumped oil in it hoping that would take care of the problem as it usually does. But no. It still runs but it knocks like a mother. Plus the motors in my 4x4 power wagon so the slant didnt do too well anyhow. but i have the 3 speed tranny, so would it be okay to put the big block in front of it? I hear that they are "tough as nails" but i dont know about it.Also both motors are $200 and the 360 only has 40k miles on it. I have a blown up 360 for heads to build the 318 but i was thinking i should put the fresh 360 in it for power and all that...yes? No?

putting stock 360 heads on to a stock CR 318 will make it a dog. You will end up with 7.something to one CR!

Cheapest junkyard swap would be to pop on a set of 302 heads. They are found in mid-80's on up 318 mopar car/trucks with the roller motor.

'308 heads are the 360 version of the swirlport 302s.

you are gona need all the cr and cam as well as gears to get that 318 screaming. They can go good if done right...

I was to lazy so i just built a basic 360 with 308 swirlport heads. KB107 pistions (cheap way to get zero deck) and a comp XE284H cam. Has 10:1 CR.

Here is a mov from when we where braking the motor in :)

Yeah, but that's gonna be rough to adapt those phord heads on a Chrysler block...
