It's the fall version of the Big Bend Open Road Race. http://www.bborr.com/
My job will be to make sure no one comes out of some ranch gate onto the course (US 385 between Fort Stockton and Marathon), to keep track of the cars that pass my station, and to report problems via radio. Other than that, I'm free to take photos, grill some bratwurst, and enjoy life. The BBORR was a blast last April.
We HAVE to get a slant in one of these races! It'll be awhile before mine is ready. The wife said something about certain livestock flying and someplace freezing over first. I AM moving in that direction, though!

I'm building my '68 Fastback for ORR and some road course action...but Like you I gotta make livestock fly and put A/C in Hades.


And it's also gonna take a while as $$$ and time permit.

my car came stock with a 150 speedo...I want to see how much of it I can use with HP and gearing

I'll be doing the MKM runs at Battle Mt and B'ville as they are closer to me.
Too many internal problems with the Silver State Classic bunch.

I drove the Silver state road last fall in my big buick,,,,,the criuse was set at 150km/hr.....frankly Im to scared to cruise that fast in the Valaint with the short wheelbase and flimsy hardtop roof pillars. Id want a cage.

A mild cage would add to peace of mind, alright. For now, I'm just taking the small steps to improve my everyday '64 Valiant and maybe allow for future upgrades. I just did the late A-body 10.87" disk brake swap on the front with C-body tie rods, "340" torsion bars, Moog HD rubber bushings, LCA plates, KYB shocks, etc. 15X7 rims, 205/60-15's for now. Yes, they clear the front fenders.
The next round will include better belts and seats, a sway bar, LBP rear end, and subframe connectors.

Putting a roll cage in was re-enforced in my mind after reading a crash report that happend during a Silver state run last year. A guy blew a tire at 165 mph in a really souped up Corvair and the crash cage and fire system is what saved his a**.

I don't plan on doing 165 with my slant powered Barracuda for an hour straight...but, Still nice to have.

Then there's all those big Ess-Ewe-Vee's out there that most of the people driving them haven't a clue about HOW to drive them. A little extra doesn't hurt, and barracuda's don't have airbags.

Despite the best efforts of customers and family, I'm still on track to work the race on October 8. I'll be looking for interesting iron at the car show and on the course.

Didn't Car Craft or Hot Rod just run a story about that race recently?

They showed some Mopar iron like that '62 Savoy (?) and a couple others I think.

That sounds like lots of fun!

Hot Rod recently ran a couple of photos of the Big Bend Open Road Race run back in April, which I also worked. Grassroots Motorsports Magazine ran a blurb, too. The Road Runner Open Road Race (www.rrorr.net) next weekend is run by the same people, just going down a different road from Fort Stockton, Texas. This time, the turn-around is in Marathon.
I'm lining up a video camera, and intend to take a lot of stills as well. I'll keep my eyes open for interesting machinery, and will share with the forum.
I hope that '62 Polara is back! And all the Panteras. And the Dart, and the ragtop Falcon, and the Studebaker ....
