Hi I feeling like being lazy right now and dont want to go digging through book bins. Can anyone tell me the standard axle length for my 1973 Plymouth Scamp. I have a 7.25 now and am in the search for a 8 3/4. Are all the 8.75s that came on a-bodies the same length?

Any A Body 8 & 3/4 will bolt right in and replace the 7 & 1/4 in any A Body from 63 to 76. Don't know about the 60-62 bodels.

The mani thing is whether or not your '73 is small bolt pattern. All A-body 8-3/4's were sbp. (Except maybe the Hemi cars)

To bolt one in you need the shock plates, U-bolts, and shorten the driveshaft 1-3/4".

some people have shortened up to 2.5...........its a matter of debate in some areas.

I haven't shortened mine yet. I am just going to measure the thing and go from there ( I have a 75 duster).

I remember the chassis manual claiming 2.25 inches was the difference from axle centerline to yoke between the two. But I don't know how the larger exle tubes factor into that.

I shortend mine 1 3/4" when going from 7 1/4" to 8 3/4". I recall a post from doc, saying, get the car on level ground on all 4 wheels, then insert slipyoke in transmission. Pull it out 3/4"-1", then measure. Just make sure to accomodate from where you measured, I mean inner or outer side of u-joint.

That also reflects what the chart says, 1.6". Remember its not enough to just shorten by the difference listed on measurment 'c' on that chart, because if you go strictly by that angles will be slightly off. Hence where that extra 0.15" comes from.

I use the seal with dustboot on it and haven't seen any signs of the yoke rubbing hte boot so looks like for my car 1 3/4" was a good choice.

That would be distance "A" on the chart.
