Hey all,

A friend is sending me a manual steering box from a 67 Dart convertible, and I was wondering what year the boxes changed from the older ball bearings to the newer needle bearings. I need to order a rebuild kit for it and wanted to make sure I got the right parts.

I'm going to be putting a 20:1 gear in this one.

Thanks!

My understanding of it is that all years of /6 boxes had bushings and all years of v8 boxes had needle bearings, but I could be wrong.

mcnoople's right; most of the \6 boxes had bushings and most of the V8 boxes had bearings.

I put the 20:1 chuck in my original '62 (bushing) box; it works great.

Here's a question for the experienced. Can you install bearings in a box that originally had bushings? Would it require machining? Is machining even possible or worth the effort?
