That's right, I need someone to hold my hand and tell me its ok! I'm preparing to drop the valve body on the transmission to fix the kickdown interface that got bamboozeled when I swapped the engine. I have loosen it all and looked at the FSM, but the shear number of springs and bearing and crap in there has me a bit fearful. I want to be able to drive this sucker to the slant six get together in 2 weeks so I am fearful of really sidelining it.

Anyone available to help me out? the car is in Menlo Park. I'll feed and water you and just about anything else!

Thanks!

Menko

I feel your pain! It's feels like walking a rope without a net.

I once pulled the valve body out of a hyundai. Talk about lots of bolts and springs and wires and .... yuck, but I got though it and I managed to get it back together, although I didn't find the problem. :(

If you think a 904 is intimidating, don't even look at a hyundai! Either way, don't look at a hyundai.

I hope you will find someone who can stop by and help, but if not,
Here is how I did it my first transmission:
Start with some extra clean rags and a roll of paper towels, take pictures, get a tape measure, draw a diagram of the valve body , label the length of each bolt as you remove them on your diagram, buy some of those disposable little plasic food containers with lids to put stuff in so nothing rolls away. Number things and take pictures of assemblys. Work in the most clean and organized way possible from the start. Don't take any shortcuts, don't rush yourself, and you will surely be able to get back to at least as good as when you started. You are a leg up on my Hyundai project, because you know what you will be trying to fix once you've got it apart.

I've got a manual with lots of pictures (if emailing them might help you) and the 904 is about the most common transmission for a mopar. If you really do get stuck, we'll be able to offer answers.

You can do it!

It's actually easy the second time. You'll laugh when you go back and read this post and see how it was not as bad as you thought it would be.

Good luck washing the tranny fluid out of your hair.

Washing your hair is going to be the hardest part of that job.
Just dive in, and take your time

The 904 is pretty simple, go for it!

I'm with Rust collector... if the 904 is anything like a 727 (which it should be), it's almost childproof. If you can unbolt the pan, you can pull the valve body.

Well, i'll see what I can find tomorrow or Sunday and let you guys know what happens. Thanks for the pics Ed. The only spring I think I have to worry about goes to one of the actuators. I'll try and go easy on the rest.

MJ

PS--appreciate the votes of sympathy ;-)

In advance, get some of that creme-type hand cleaner that contains orange oil. Get the kind without ground-up pumice or other abrasive or you'll be sorry!

Once you've finished, glop a bunch of this stuff into your hair and wherever else you've got trans fluid and grease. You'll still need several run-throughs with regular shampoo (or even dishwashing liquid...) but it'll help.

And it gets the crud out from under your fingernails.................

Sorry I won't be available Menko, and don't have much auto trans experience anyway. But if you're in the neighborhood, drop by Menlo Park Chevron (1200 El Camino Real, cross street Oak Grove), I'm the weekend smog tech. We've got lots of hand cleaner. I'm there every Sat-Sun, 9-5, except Oct. 1, when I'll be in Bakersfield for the drag races.

Good luck with the tranny!
