Ok,
Finally I get to open myself up to flaming. Because I collected transmissions and bellhousings from various places I have not seen if there was a gasket between an A833 aluminum case and its matching bellhousing. Because I never used aluminum stuff I just dunno if it is different from the standard iron mating surfaces...I can think of reasons either way to use or not use a gasket and can sure make one out of gasket paper, but is one used in between the 833 and its bellhousing? (I went andI got out the flame extinguisher)

When asking that question ask yourself this what are sealing against. Are there any fluids at the parting seam of the bell and the front of the trans. In other words no gasket now if you want to put a dab of anti sieze on there to prevent corrosion that should be fine as long as you don't go overboard. I have heard and asked stupider question myself. Remember there is no such thing as stupid questions just stupid people thnking they have all the answers.

I don't think that's quite true. There is such a thing as a stupid question—it's the kind that the asker could answer all by himself by just thinking about it or trying it out for himelf, without getting any additional information first. (closely related is the lazy question, which the asker can answer all by himself by accessing readily-available information but instead wants someone to spoon-feed it to him).

Rock's question is not a stupid or lazy question, because lots of metal-to-metal junctions have gaskets (or gasket-like devices) even if there's no fluid sealing requirement. I'm thinking, for instance, of the metal "starter seal" plate between the starter and the bellhousing.

Mcnoople, slantsixdan and all....many thanks!! The collective wisdom of you guys immediately picked up on my concerns. Because I am somewhat experienced in mechanical work, I could see doing just what Mcnoople suggested, and also as Slantsixdan suggested, I could see a good reason for a metal gasket between the bellhousing and the tranny. It would allow some flex given aluminum cases, under high torque....not slop, but a bit of give, or it could keep surfaces from oxidizing together or rubbing together.... Because I don't know exactly why the shim is between the starter and the bellhousing, and because I believe in mopar engineering, I could envision a deal of "like starter, like tranny" and I sure couldn't find a scrap of writing about it.

But guys, let us new hear some of the dreaded Alt*.*"s (name abbreviated in respect of) stuff that seems to make old timers puke!

And there's what I like to call "vibration gaskets", such as the foam gaskets between master cylinder and firewall, and behind disc brake splash shields. OK, maybe these weren't intended as vibration isolators, but they do get us in the habit of putting gaskets between stuff. Isn't that why we wear underwear?

I've never seen posts by Altavoz or Ilya Beloozerov, so just out of curiousity I searched them as Keyword and Author and got no hits. Then I tried the same search on Google and got no hits. Perhaps they have been banished from the Internet.
