If you need a smaller filter, or a larger one, here are some options:

these are about 3.25" in diameter
length.....Fram........Wix........Purolator
2.483......PH3512....51335.....L10101
3.790......PH16.......51085......L14670
4.338......PH43.......51068......L20081
5.178......PH8A.......51515......L30001
6.983......PH977A...51773......L40017

this one is about 3" in diameter
3.400......PH3614....51348.....L10241

The stand pipe will need to be removed to clear some of the shorter filters.

I had to get one from Wix to run a big block in a Demo Derby car once (that front mounted oil filter isn't good)... There are two that are listed for a Ford Pinto that will 'fit' the mopar BB and both are about 1.5-2" long...I wouldn't use them for daily driving, I suspect the 1.5" one had a bypass spring in it that went straight to bypass when I fired the mill over...

Excellent "short" filter: Mann W917 .

Can't see why you'd want to run a shortie, though, when the long one (Motorcraft FL-1A, AC PF2, Wix 51515, NAPA Gold 1515, Purolator L30001, etc.) fits and works great...

I have always ran the Fram PH8A on my slants - they fit and there is more filtering capacity.

So do I, but we are ignorant fools, because EVERYBODY knows that Fram filters are junk, just waiting to destroy your engine. Because Bob the Oil Guy and SSD have said so...

Fram filters are inferior, no doubt. However, we must ask ourselves, how good is good enough? My dad has nearly 300k original miles on his 318 pickup, and has used Fram filters all the way around since day 1. It could easily be a fortunate coincidence (and a lot of highway miles), but I would be willing to wager nearly every filter on the market at the moment is "good enough." That being said, I'd still by a cheap, repackaged purolator over a fram any day, just for the price difference.

That's about the extent of it. Given the wide variety of demonstrably superior filters that can be had for a price equal (or within pennies) of what a demonstrably inferior Fram filter costs...

...why take the chance?

Why bother, the Fram filters are good enough. I don't even change the oil anymore. Why should I? I pour a quart of Chevron 20/50 in every other week. After a couple of months the oil has changed itself! I use a new filter every 6 months, if I remember to change it. I have been doing this for years and this is the second car this particular \6 has been in.

I used Fram for years as well on my late '70 383 Fury. No problems. A few years ago my oil pressure dropped to only 40 psi at fast idle/driving speeds. Did a test and replaced the Fram (PH8A) with a Purolator equivilent...gained my lost 10 psi with the same oil in the engine.

hitokage, that's an interesting link. A friend of mine, an engineer here in Canada, worked for Chrysler Canada in the early '60s to late '70s, and for Fram Canada after that. Your e-mail link sounds similar to a lot of what he's told me about what left the Fram production lines. That's one reason why I avoid 'em.

This thread was to give options to those that want a larger, or smaller, filter for their slant 6. It turns into a Fram slam. :( The letter from the Allied Signal engineer could have been from a competitor, using internet corporate sabotage.
That said, I avoid Fram filters also. I use Pulolator or Wix, buying a dozen at a time when I catch them on sale. Fram does make a good filter, the ones used by many TF and FC teams!
Besides the slant 6, these filters not only fit SB and BB Mopars, they will also go on 2.2/2.5 and 2.0/2.4 four bangers. Most applications have plenty of room for a larger filter. I have an L20081 on my '00 Neon 2.0 and I talked my neighbor into puting an L30001 on his '94 Caravan 2.5.
