Hi!
Got my hands on the lancer finally. Had a couple of good days, the car is nearly stripped to the pure body . jacked it up at the rear, both wheels off the ground. Axle has 9 bolts, asymetrical pattern. Turned one tire 9 times to have (almost)exactly 14 turns of the driveshaft. Other wheel didn´t move. From what I know, this should be a 3.11:1 ratio, non-locked, 7 1/4" axle. Am I right?

By the way, got me a 66 Dart 4door w/o engine but with rust, pretty cheap, pretty close to me, which I will make a daily driver before really starting with the smashed lancer projekt :-)
Thanks
Chris

No such thing as 3.11. The most foolproof way to check your ratio is to chalk the inboard sidewall of the tire that'll turn and block the other tire (or don't lift it up) so that it can't turn even a little bit. Turn the marked tire through two full revolutions and count quarter-turns of the driveshaft by watching the rear U-joint caps as the come to face the pavement. Divide the number of quarter-turns by four to get your ratio.

Dan, thanks for your fast reply. I spent half an hour under the car figuring out what I was actually doing there. This means, I tried to be and think like a rear axle :-) I marked both tires, tried it with the passenger and driver side. The other wheel didnt turn a bit. no need to block it then(?) 9 turns of the wheel give me 14 revolutions of the driveshaft. 1.55556 rear ratio??? I must be wrong but I can´t figure out where I´m wrong.

Why do you keep turning your wheel 9 times, wussupwitdat?!

Turn it TWO times like Dan the man sed and count how many times your driveshaft turns. TWO times to compensate for the spider gears in the differential spinning at a 2:1 ratio to take up the non-turning wheel.

Lol... well, at 9 turns, the shaft turned exactly 14 times, that´s why :-) Got that figured by now, it´s a 3.23 axle. Who the hell is Ed Rooney???

Well, that's because he wasn't sick—he was skipping school.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Mrs. Bueller. It's a fool's paradise; he is just leading you down the primrose path...

9 turns of the tire and 14 turns of the driveshaft, hmmm... 14 divided by 9 is about 1.56. Them's good highway gears!

You forgot to multiply by 2 since its an open rear and he only turned ONE rear tire. Its a 3.23.
