I've started my car and it knocked before the oil pressure came up....

Is there someway to prevent the 0 oil pressure at startup?

So I've changed the oil and the filter and the problem went away.... I had the oil pump standpipe but removed <--- does this really help at startup???

I've driven it hard everything seems ok

would any permanent damage might have occured?

An oil accumulator with a shutoff valve or a preoiler...........
If the anti-drainback valve is crappy in the oil filter the standpipe doesn't help at all............

With a good anti-drainback valve, the oil in the filter slowly leaks out of the filter thru the bearings until it hits the top of the standpipe. With no standpipe, the oil can completely empty out of the filter. Then when you start the engine there's more empty volume to fill up (all of filter vs just a little at the top) before you have oil pressure.
With good oil, at idle, I doubt it. Just a little bit more wear and tear
