What model and year is your car? How many miles on it? Manual or automatic transmission? Rear axle ratio? What kind of driving do you do, mostly city or mostly highway? What gas mileage are you getting now?

The basics:
Go easy on the gas pedal, and on the brakes. Less acceleration.
Lighten up! Clean out the trunk, the back seat, etc.
Tuneup. No, a real tuneup. Use a tach, timing light, vacuum gauge, and all. Carb, choke, valves, distributor, spark plugs and wires.
Keep your tires inflated properly.
Check your brake adjustments.
Get a fresh alignment.

Then you start getting fancier.
Synthetic oil.
Electronic ignition.
Two-barrel carburetor.
Low restriction exhaust.

Go Crazy!
Crank scraper / windage tray.
Headers.
EFI.
Aerodynamic aids.
Fiberglass/Carbon Fiber body panels.

Notice that most of the changes to the car can also improve its performance.

Duct tape a raw egg to your gas pedal. Then DONT BREAK THE EGG!!!

Well...sure, but I might quibble with that 2bbl carburetor. They make a nice driveability improvement, but mileage can go up or down, depending on a lot of different factors. It's possible to get much better mileage with a 1bbl than with a 2bbl.

I used synthetic oil in the tranny/rearend of a 74 dart, and had to hold the brakes on at traffic lights, so I think it would help a bit, and I don´t change that so often either...

Having to hold the brakes on at traffic lights is normal regardless of engine oil, with an automatic transmission.

I think the super slippery synthetic oil slipped out and got on the brake shoes, making super slippery shoes....................

hehee the holding the brake at the stop light is killer! that would not only save you some mpg but some tickets too.... imagine this: you switch to synt and then you get a ticket for invading the pedestrian crossing lane.... :lol:

Assuming your doing it for purely economic reasons, true. Range is also a consideration, as is just having made a measurable improvement in one's car. And, remember, some of these items in the fancier group can be done very inexpensively, depending on your situation.

True only in that headers are generally made for increased power, with compromises made for convenience. The right set of headers or manifold, exhaust pipes, and muffler can improve fuel efficiency. Ok, it was a manual 3 speed ok, and if the ground was about flat, I didn´t have to hold the brakes on before I changed to synthetic oil...IN THE TRANNY AND REAREND, the engine got old dinos in it...

Soooo, I guess it makes for less friction, and a bit of mileage :?
