I have an 84 half ton pickup that i just changed instrument clusters in, went from a non-oil or temp gauge unit (idiot lights) to one that has temp and oil press gauges, the temp sending unit was no problem, but the old oil pressure sending unit has 3 wires and the threads are waaaay bigger than the gauge type sending unit. Is there a different tap for a gauge unit, and which wire do I use?
Thanks for any help here
Bill

On the idiot light equipped trucks, the 2 wires across from each other actually delay electrical "juice" to the electric choke til the engine runs.. it knows this because if it ain't running, there will be no pressure. This is so that if you are the type that likes to sit and listen to the radio you need the key on to power up the radio. If you then want to start the engine, once the choke heater spring "times out", the choke will stay wide open, not what you want on a cold engine. Alot of '80s trucks had a "T" or a "Y" fitting with both types of sending units... the bell one for the gauge, the other for the choke. You can take the wire on the top of your sending unit plug, that don't have a wire across from it and tie into that wire, then bridge it over to the bell sending unit so your gauge works. I have also seen, like early '90s trucks, that use BOTH a gauge and an idiot light. The oil gauge is backlit in red til the gauge starts to move.

Thanks, funny thing is, my choke is a coil unit, not electrical, but who knows what has been changed on it ...all the lean burn stuff seems to be gone...I will try the stand alone wire and see what happens. at least now I have a clue on this, will get a reducer fitting to fit the new sending unit.
Thanks again,
Bill
