What is the best way to clean the cigarette lighter without damaging the heating element. The one on my truck is caked with ashes and won't hardly heat up anymore.

Use a Bic for cigs and use the lighter for hashish only.

Unscrew the eleent from the handle...replace element with new one from Canadian Tire....heat till red hot....drop a small (5 gram) piece onto the element. (keep windows closed and heater/ac off).

I bet I have 5 lighters in every vehicle...I always grab a handful at the wrecking yard.
